KUALA LUMPUR: The area around former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's residence in Jalan Langgak Duta remained quiet this morning amid speculation that he could be transferred there to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
Checks found a police van in the area, along with several safety cones along the road leading to the residence.
However, there were no visible signs of special preparations for the former prime minister's return.
Sentul district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Anuar Bakri Abdul Salam, said police operations in the area were proceeding as usual.
He said the police had yet to receive any information on the possibility of Najib being released from prison and transferred to his residence in Langgak Duta.
Police had also not received any notification from the Prisons Department regarding the matter, he added.
Previously, police had stationed a mobile police station near Najib's residence as a security precaution in the event that the transfer from prison went ahead.
The deployment was intended to ensure the safety of media personnel, residents and supporters, as well as prevent traffic congestion in the area.
Yesterday, the defence team confirmed that Najib would serve the remainder of his prison sentence in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case at his residence in Langgak Duta with his family.
His lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, was reported to have said that his client had received a house arrest order from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, together with an attachment detailing the conditions and mechanisms for its implementation.
However, details of the order's implementation could not be disclosed following instructions from the Prisons Department.
Shafee also said that the High Court's decision to dismiss an application to stay the prison sentence in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case would not prevent Najib from serving the remainder of his sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest.
On Sept 18, Sultan Ibrahim granted a conditional pardon allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
However, the implementation of the house arrest order is subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.
