MEXICO CITY — Research indicates that while money is a primary driver of well-being, its impact on subjective happiness eventually plateaus—a phenomenon known as “income saturation.” According to a new international analysis, once basic needs for housing, healthcare, and security are met, additional monetary increases provide diminishing returns for life satisfaction.
The study, conducted by Remitly using econometric models from Purdue University and cost-of-living data from Numbeo, establishes specific annual income thresholds required to reach this state of “financial satiety” for 2026. For Mexico, the global average threshold is set at $25,164 USD (approximately $452,952 MXN) per year. In contrast, the United States requires a significantly higher income of $134,827 USD ($2,426,886 MXN) to reach the same level of satisfaction.
The Science of Income Saturation
The theory of income saturation, documented in academic publications such as Nature Human Behaviour, argues that the relationship between salary and happiness is neither linear nor infinite. Evaluations of well-being tend to stabilize once predictable requirements—such as material security, shelter, and basic recreation—are satisfied. Beyond this point, non-material factors, including job autonomy, leisure time, and community networks, become the primary determinants of happiness.
The data reveals a profound geographic disparity in these thresholds:
- Iceland: Records the world’s highest requirement at $163,579 USD ($2,944,422 MXN) annually. While driven by a high cost of living, the country maintains the second-highest ranking in the 2025 World Happiness Report.
- United Kingdom: Requires an average of $120,248 USD (£89,959 GBP), with London significantly higher at $155,187 USD (£116,097 GBP).
- Ethiopia: Represents the lowest threshold on the list at $10,176 USD ($183,168 MXN). However, with a median annual salary of just $777 USD ($13,986 MXN), this threshold remains unreachable for the majority of its active population.
- Slovenia: Highlights a policy success story. With an average salary of $42,754 USD, it exceeds the required satisfaction threshold of $36,769 USD by 16.3%. This is attributed to public policies that integrate subjective well-being metrics into state budgets and labor regulations.
The Domestic Divide in the United States
In the U.S., the federal average of $134,827 USD is only covered by 55.8% of the national median salary ($75,300 USD), highlighting a significant material gap. The data further shows that the cost of “happiness” varies drastically by geography, with coastal and tech hubs driving prices upward.
New York City stands as the most expensive location in the country, requiring $195,969 USD ($3,527,442 MXN) annually—over $61,000 above the national average. Other high-cost hubs include Honolulu ($192,441 USD), San Francisco ($191,266 USD), Seattle ($176,960 USD), and Washington, D.C. ($171,081 USD).
Conversely, the Midwest and South offer more accessible paths to financial stability. Cincinnati, OH, recorded the lowest requirement among the 50 largest metros at $122,480 USD, while Texas cities like San Antonio ($123,656 USD), Houston ($125,224 USD), and Austin ($130,123 USD) form a cluster of more affordable urban centers.
The Mexican Landscape
For Mexico, the national benchmark of $25,164 USD varies by up to 35% depending on the region. San Miguel de Allende and Monterrey lead the country in costs due to high real estate values and local inflation. In contrast, culturally vibrant cities like Oaxaca or Veracruz require up to $7,740 USD ($139,320 MXN) less per year to achieve the same stability.
While formal average salaries in Mexico often fall short of this threshold, reports from the Global Happiness Report suggest that social capital—including family cohesion and community support—acts as a buffer. In Mexico and across Latin America, these factors can improve life satisfaction scores by up to 2.3 points, regardless of income level.
Conclusion
The data confirms that while money serves as an enabler of tranquility by resolving material uncertainty, it yields diminishing emotional dividends once a baseline is met. The findings suggest that the primary challenge for policymakers is not simply raising income, but implementing strategies to contain the costs of basic needs, bringing real wages closer to these thresholds of “financial satiety.”
