Brentford travel to Hull City on Sunday looking to put their first defeat of the season behind them, although Keith Andrews will have to make changes to his midfield following last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool.
The Bees had been unbeaten in their opening six Premier League matches before Liverpool’s visit to the Gtech Community Stadium, where Keane Lewis-Potter’s first-half opener was eventually overturned after Yehor Yarmoliuk received a straight red card.
Vitaly Janelt was also dismissed late on, leaving Andrews without two regular midfield options for the trip to the MKM Stadium.
Hull have made an encouraging return to the Premier League after nine years away, collecting nine points from seven matches. They sit just one point behind sixth-placed Brentford, having already beaten Manchester United and Newcastle United and drawn with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Everton.
However, the Tigers were beaten 1-0 by Fulham last weekend, with manager Sergej Jakirović particularly unhappy with his team’s performance.
Brentford Team News
Keith Andrews has confirmed that Jannik Schuster is available for Sunday's trip to Hull City after recovering from a knock and illness, with no fresh injuries or setbacks reported ahead of the game.
Though, the Bees head coach will be without Yehor Yarmoliuk and Vitaly Janelt after their dismissals against Liverpool. Both midfielders are suspended, leaving Andrews with decisions to make in an area of the pitch that has been relatively settled this season.
Mamadou Sangaré could be handed an opportunity from the start, having impressed after coming off the bench against Liverpool. Mathias Jensen and Mikkel Damsgaard provide further options as Andrews considers how best to compensate for the two absences.
Schuster's return is a welcome boost, particularly after Brentford's recent defensive injury concerns. Nathan Collins and Sepp van den Berg have also been working their way back to full fitness, with the latter returning to the starting XI against Liverpool.
Josh Dasilva, Antoni Milambo and Kaye Furo remain among Brentford's longer-term absentees.
Keane Lewis-Potter is another player likely to feature against his former club, having scored Brentford's opening goal against Liverpool last weekend.
Hull City Form and Team News
Hull’s return to the top flight has gone better than many expected, particularly at home.
Jakirović’s side have conceded just twice at the MKM Stadium this season, despite regularly allowing opponents to dominate possession. Their opening-day victory over Manchester United was followed by a goalless draw against Aston Villa and another point against Everton.
Last weekend’s performance at Fulham was considerably less encouraging, with Alex Iwobi scoring the only goal.
“We were very, very poor,” Jakirović admitted afterwards, before suggesting changes could be needed.
Hull also have their own injury concerns. Robinio Vaz suffered an Achilles problem against Fulham, while Jack Butland, Matt Targett, Charlie Hughes, Eliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi and Ilyas Ansah have been among those unavailable.
Mohamed-Ali Cho and Lucas Gourna-Douath are also dealing with fitness problems.
Mohamed Belloumi has been one of Hull’s standout attacking players, scoring three Premier League goals and threatening from the right.
What to Expect From Hull City vs Brentford
Brentford could have more possession than usual on Sunday.
Hull have averaged just 32 per cent possession in their opening seven Premier League matches, preferring to defend in numbers and attack quickly when opportunities arise.
They have been particularly difficult to break down at home, and Andrews will need his midfield to create openings against a side comfortable playing without the ball.
Damsgaard and Jensen could play an important role, although the absence of Janelt and Yarmoliuk leaves Brentford with less of their usual midfield protection.
Hull are dangerous when they win possession high up the pitch, having already scored three goals from high turnovers this season. Belloumi’s pace and willingness to take on defenders will also give Brentford something to consider.
The clubs have a history, although Sunday’s fixture will be their first meeting in the Premier League.
The Bees won 5-1 on their last visit to Hull in February 2020, with Saïd Benrahma scoring a hat-trick. Lewis-Potter was in the Hull side that afternoon.

Prediction
Brentford have responded well to difficult situations under Andrews, but losing two midfielders to suspension is far from ideal against a Hull side that have proved difficult to beat at home.
The Tigers have shown they can compete with more established Premier League opposition, and their defensive organisation could make chances difficult to come by.
Brentford have enough quality to take something from the trip, although a tight contest looks likely.
Prediction: Hull City 1-2 Brentford
