5 keyboard app permissions that could put your passwords at risk

Virtually every transaction carried out in Nigeria today happens on a smartphone. From quick USSD transfers and commercial banking apps to WhatsApp chats and social media logins, our phones hold the keys to our livelihood.

To make typing faster or more colourful, many phone users turn to third-party keyboard applications downloaded from the internet. People are naturally drawn to custom fonts, animated stickers, pidgin word suggestions, and fancy themes that brighten up their screens.

However, many users do not stop to think about the level of trust they give these tools. Because a keyboard processes every single letter, number, and punctuation mark you press, a compromised or shady keyboard app is essentially a digital spy sitting right beneath your fingertips.

According to threat intelligence reports published by international cybersecurity researchers at Kaspersky, malicious keyboards and unauthorised keyloggers remain some of the easiest channels for attackers to harvest credentials. When a keyboard has unchecked access to your operating system, your debit card digits and private pins can be captured before they even reach your bank.

In this article, Tribune Online examines five risky keyboard app permissions that place your passwords and financial credentials in serious danger, alongside a step-by-step guide to securing your phone today.

Full network and unrestricted internet access

A basic keyboard only needs to convert your finger taps on the screen into letters inside a text box.

When a keyboard application requests unlimited internet access, it gains the power to open background web connections without your knowledge. Legitimate keyboards sometimes request data connectivity for online translation or cloud spell-checking, but rogue applications abuse this bridge to transmit everything you type directly to remote servers controlled by cybercriminals.

Once a keyboard possesses the ability to transmit data over the web, every password, private PIN, and secret message entered during your normal phone usage can be silently bundled and uploaded to an external database.

Clipboard and pasteboard read privileges

Many smartphone users rely on password managers or copy one-time passcodes (OTPs) and account numbers from SMS alerts to paste them directly into banking applications.

If a third-party keyboard has permission to read your clipboard, it continuously monitors everything you copy, even when the keyboard itself is hidden off-screen. This means that if you copy an authentication code, a recovery passphrase, or a freshly reset password from an email, the keyboard software instantly reads and stores that copied text.

This background snooping completely bypasses your visual precautions. Even if you choose not to type out your secret password manually, the app silently collects the copied text straight out of your phone memory.

There is rarely any genuine technical reason why an input typing tool should demand broad access to your device internal storage, photo gallery, or document folders.

Shady keyboard developers often claim they need storage access to save custom sticker packs or personalised background themes. In reality, granting full storage permissions allows the application to scan internal directories, inspect downloaded transaction receipts, and read saved document files where many people mistakenly store password notes.

Combining storage access with internet connectivity gives the app the dangerous ability to harvest offline credentials and sensitive bank statement PDFs stored on your phone storage.

Accessibility services deep system access

On modern Android phones, Accessibility Services are designed to help users with physical impairments navigate through audio prompts and automated screen interactions.

Unfortunately, this permission represents the highest risk level when granted to an unverified keyboard tool. An app with accessibility privileges can observe everything displayed on your screen, track what other apps are running, and intercept fields that are otherwise hidden by standard security blocks.

Malicious applications frequently use accessibility permissions to defeat the security features that mask passwords as black dots. By reading the screen hierarchy directly, the application unmasks hidden characters the instant you enter them into a login form.

Persistent device location and gps tracking

A keyboard app has no functional business knowing the exact street, compound, or coordinates where you are sitting while typing a text message.

Some predatory apps ask for fine location data under the excuse of offering local weather updates or regional slang suggestions. When paired with your login routines, location tracking helps malicious actors map out your workplace, home address, and financial habits.

This geographic profile makes targeted social engineering and identity theft significantly easier for scammers. Knowing exactly where and when you access your accounts gives fraudsters contextual data to craft convincing phishing attacks against your accounts.

Step-by-Step: How to audit and protect your smartphone keyboard

Safeguarding your phone requires a few quick adjustments within your device settings menu.

First, navigate to your phone “Settings”, select “Apps” or “App Management”, and locate your active keyboard application. Tap on “Permissions” to inspect every single privilege granted to the tool, and immediately revoke non-essential access to your location, storage, microphone, and contacts.

Second, switch back to trusted default keyboards developed directly by your phone operating system, such as Gboard on Android or the default iOS keyboard on Apple devices. These mainstream options are subjected to stringent operating-system sandboxing and regular security audits.

Third, whenever you enter sensitive credentials, check whether your bank application offers its own secure on-screen numeric keypad. Using the bank internal scrambling keypad prevents third-party keyboard utilities from recording your digits, keeping your funds safe from unauthorised snooping.
