The Minnesota Timberwolves enter the 2026-27 NBA season with one of the league’s most intriguing backcourts following the acquisition of LaMelo Ball to pair with Anthony Edwards. However, former NBA head coach Tyrone Corbin believes Minnesota’s championship aspirations will ultimately depend on its defense rather than its offensive firepower.
Speaking with Kyle Odegard of NEXTPredict, Corbin expressed confidence in Ball and Edwards developing chemistry but questioned whether the Timberwolves can consistently slow opposing teams.
“They’re going to have to get some stops at some point. Offensively, you look at the talent they’ll have on the floor in those two guys alone, they’re going to be able to score the ball. Do they have enough to figure out how to slow other teams?” Corbin said.

“There are some nights you just can’t force your will on a team, and defense will save you. With Rudy Gobert anchoring in there I hope it will help some, but they’re going to need to stay in front of their guys at some point.”
Minnesota finished its preseason with a 3-3 record, including a 133-116 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Friday night.
Despite his defensive concerns, Corbin expects Ball and Edwards to complement each other offensively.
“Easy. They both are dynamic offensive talents. LaMelo can score from anywhere but he can really pass the ball. You have to make sure the guys on the floor with him are looking, because he will throw it from anywhere and get it there.”
Tyrone Corbin believes LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards can thrive together
Ball’s arrival gives Edwards another established offensive creator capable of generating scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.
Corbin also believes their personalities will help accelerate the adjustment.
“He is a great, great young man. I think his personality, and the things I hear about Ant’s personality, is that they’ll mesh pretty quickly, and that talent on the floor will come together.”
However, Minnesota faces considerable competition in a Western Conference featuring the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.
With Gobert anchoring the interior defense, the Timberwolves have an established rim protector. Still, Corbin emphasized that Minnesota’s perimeter defenders must provide sufficient resistance to maximize the team’s potential.
“They’re going to be good, man. To have Edwards there, and then add a kid like LaMelo, and Rudy in the middle. With the way they’re going to be able to score, if they can get some stops, they’re going to be something to reckon with in the West.”
The Timberwolves will begin their regular season Wednesday, Oct. 21, against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Miami Heat on the road. The matchup tips off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, providing Minnesota an early opportunity to demonstrate how its revamped backcourt performs against Eastern Conference competition.
