OpenAI is bringing ads in ChatGPT to 26 more countries, taking the total to 89. More than 100,000 advertisers have now run campaigns on the platform, the company said. It launched ChatGPT ads just over eight months ago.
OpenAI announced the expansion in a blog post on Wednesday. The new markets include 14 more Latin American countries, among them Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. Ads are also launching in Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and in more European markets. OpenAI brought ads to 31 European countries in August.
The platform had about 20,000 advertisers in late August, Alix Coutures reported for The Information.
Who sees the ads
Ads appear only for users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions stay ad-free. Advertisers can buy them through technology partners or on their own through OpenAI’s Ads Manager.
“Ads in ChatGPT are clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT’s answers, and advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides,” OpenAI wrote.
The company said it keeps conversations private from advertisers and does not sell customer data. Next, it plans more ad formats, buying options and ways to measure results. It is also looking at new ways for businesses to reach people inside ChatGPT. Last month, it started testing Sponsored Agents with some US advertisers.
A $1bn run rate
OpenAI’s ad business reached an annualised $1bn in revenue in August, up from $100m in March, Ashley Capoot reported for CNBC.
Rival Anthropic made OpenAI’s ads the focus of its first Super Bowl campaign in February, CNBC reported. Anthropic pledged to keep its own chatbot, Claude, ad-free.
OpenAI is building up its ad business ahead of a potential stock market listing, Reuters reported. OpenAI executives have signalled a 2027 listing, according to CNBC.
