By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City woman who was arrested on a bench warrant after repeatedly missing court appearances has been spared further legal trouble after her daughter-in-law, who accused her of causing harm more than two years ago, asked the court to withdraw the charge.
Angela Copious appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 on Wednesday, October 14, after being detained over the holiday weekend for failing to attend previous court hearings.
Copious was charged with causing harm to her daughter-in-law following an alleged altercation on July 26, 2024.
In court, Copious explained that she had been seriously ill and claimed her daughter had emailed medical documents to explain her absences. However, the court had no record of receiving those documents.
The matter took an unexpected turn when the daughter-in-law appeared and informed the Magistrate that she had forgiven her mother-in-law and no longer wished to pursue the case. She requested that the charge be withdrawn so both women could move on with their lives.
Faber also asked that they be bound over to keep the peace, but the Magistrate did not impose such an order.
With the charge withdrawn and her bail not revoked, Copious was allowed to leave court.
Before departing, a relieved Copious turned to her daughter-in-law and told her, “I just want to be your mother-in-law.”
The emotional exchange brought an end to a criminal complaint that had been pending since July 2024.
