The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on Nigerians to reject hate speech, embrace tolerance and promote patriotism and collective responsibility in the interest of national unity and peaceful coexistence.
Shaibu made the call after visiting the Campaign Against Genocide Museum in Kigali, Rwanda, as part of his official working visit to the country.
The Army Chief, who noted that national unity remained fundamental to achieving lasting peace, security and sustainable development, said Rwanda’s experience underscored the dangers of hate speech and the need to promote tolerance, patriotism and collective responsibility among citizens.
He also stressed the importance of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence in building a united and stable nation.
According to a statement by the Nigerian Army, Shaibu’s visit highlighted the need for Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious and political differences in the collective pursuit of national peace and stability.
The statement added that the visit underscored the critical roles of responsible leadership, early conflict prevention and sustained civil-military cooperation in preventing violent conflicts and strengthening national cohesion.
It said the lessons from Rwanda’s history served as a reminder of the importance of promoting mutual understanding, tolerance and national unity to prevent conflict and safeguard Nigeria’s peace and stability.
