Tanzania’s efforts to promote sustainable agriculture received a fresh boost following the introduction of an organic agroecology quality mark designed to help consumers distinguish organically produced agricultural products from those produced using synthetic agricultural chemicals.
The Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM) unveiled the mark during the recent World Food Day celebrations in Tanga, highlighting the growing importance of sustainable food production, environmental conservation and market opportunities for farmers adopting organic agroecological practices.
The initiative seeks to give eligible organic products greater visibility, strengthen consumer confidence and improve their competitiveness in domestic and international markets. By providing a recognisable identification mark, the initiative could also help consumers make more informed choices about the agricultural products they purchase.
For farmers, particularly those investing in organic production methods, the introduction represents an opportunity to demonstrate the identity of their products and potentially reach customers who value environmentally responsible farming.
Speaking after the launch, TOAM Chief Executive Officer Bakari Mongo said the quality mark had been specifically developed to add value to organic agricultural products and make identification easier for both producers and consumers.
He explained that the mark would serve as an important means of distinguishing eligible organic products in the marketplace, helping them stand out among the different agricultural goods available to consumers.
In an increasingly competitive agricultural sector, product identification can play an important role in connecting producers with buyers. Consumers need reliable information to understand what they are purchasing, while farmers require effective ways to communicate the production methods behind their goods.
The quality mark is intended to address this need by providing a common identification mechanism for qualifying products. Its effectiveness, however, will depend on consistent implementation, compliance with established requirements and public awareness of what the mark represents.
Mongo urged organic agricultural producers throughout the country to take advantage of the opportunities expected to arise from the initiative.
He said the mark could open doors to domestic and international markets, encouraging producers to ensure that every eligible product entering the market carries the identification.
Access to wider markets can create opportunities for farmers to increase sales, develop relationships with buyers and improve the commercial prospects of their agricultural enterprises.

Mongo clarified that the quality mark would not automatically be available to every producer. Applicants would have to satisfy specific criteria and requirements established under the procedures and regulations governing organic agricultural production and processing.

Clear standards and appropriate verification procedures help establish whether products qualify for the designation and protect consumers against misleading representations.

Removing such obstacles is important for producers seeking to adopt sustainable practices, improve their products and participate more effectively in agricultural markets.
Organic agroecology places emphasis on farming approaches that work with ecological processes, including maintaining soil fertility, supporting biodiversity and managing agricultural resources responsibly.
Depending on the farming system, these approaches may include composting, crop rotation, mulching, intercropping and biological methods of managing pests.

It can also help establish a framework for addressing constraints affecting producers and promoting farming approaches that protect natural resources.

Protecting soil health is particularly important because productive soils support crop growth, influence water retention and contribute to the long-term viability of farming.
Environmental conservation is similarly relevant as farmers respond to changing production conditions and increasing pressure on natural resources.

In Tanga, the celebrations brought together government institutions, private organisations and development partners from within Tanzania and abroad, including TOAM.
The event was held under the theme, “Today’s Innovations, Better Nutrition Tomorrow: Towards Vision 2050,” emphasising the importance of innovation in shaping future food systems and supporting better nutrition.
