He called 'reconciliation' the "most important thing" but some "don't want it"
Prince Harry hinted at a potential reconciliation with his family after years of rift. He said he wants to repair his strained relationships with his father, King Charles III, and older brother, Prince William, urging his family to move on from past differences."With everything else that's going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile," Harry told GQ magazine in an interview published Tuesday. The Duke of Sussex, 42, acknowledged that his family's rift had attracted public attention because it reflected struggles many people experience in their own lives, including disagreements between siblings and strained relationships between parents and children.
"Some people don't want it to work out. I want it to work out.""Sibling disagreements, broken relationships between kids and their parents, kids and one parent - that continues to come up with me the whole time with people that I speak to," he added on public finding it "relatable"The prince also acknowledged that repairing relationships does not mean erasing past hurt. "For me, there's enough drama in the world and enough drama in people's lives than to continue with issues with family," he said.
"It's not worth it."He added that while "scars stick around forever", he wanted to encourage people to let go of the past and work towards reconciliation.
Harry also spoke about his family's return to Britain, saying that enrolling his children in a British school had been particularly meaningful to him."I didn't know how important it was to me. I always thought it was going to be something that we would try and do, but now they've been in school for two weeks.
They're loving it and it's just giving them a whole different experience," he told GQ.He also expressed hope that his troubled relationship with the British press could improve, saying he wanted to draw a line under past disputes. "My hope is that it will change," he said, adding that he hoped all sides could leave aspects of the past behind and work towards the greater good.He also talked about carrying the grief of losing his mother at a young age.
"I love the fact that I'm able to now sort of carry the memory of my mother with me, with my work, rather than it hold me down, pull me back, or wallowing in that grief," he said. However, he added, "I certainly don't want any sympathy. That's where we're way past that. Why? Because I'm a prince. I've got a support network around me, I've done different forms of therapy, and I put in the work.
I wonder where I would be if I didn't - it could be a very different situation."The royal riftHarry and his wife, Meghan, stepped back from their roles as working royals in 2020 and moved to California. Their departure was followed by public criticism of the royal institution, a series of revelations about family tensions and Harry's memoir, Spare, which detailed his strained relationship with William.Harry has also pursued legal action against British newspaper groups over alleged unlawful information gathering, further intensifying his long-running conflict with parts of the press.Although Harry has met his father in recent months after the latter's cancer diagnosis, he has not made such contact with his brother.
