The curtains will formally come down on this year’s Durga Puja celebrations in the state on Saturday evening as Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha is set to inaugurate the annual ‘Mayer Gomon’ programme, the ceremonial farewell procession marking the immersion of Goddess Durga and her retinue of deities.
The event, popularly known as the Durga Puja Carnival, will commence at 5 pm from the frontage of Maharani Tulsibati Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Agartala.
The programme serves as the official culmination of the Sharadiya Durga Puja celebrations, bringing together puja committees from across the city in a colourful procession before the idols are taken for immersion at the Dashamighat area of the Howrah River.
According to a joint communication issued by Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Commissioner Saju Waheed and Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee, elaborate arrangements have been made for the event.
As per government instructions, trucks and vehicles carrying idols of Goddess Durga and accompanying deities will assemble in a designated queue stretching from the front of the Maharani Tulsibati Girls’ Higher Secondary School up to the Royal Palace area and along the Laxmi Narayan Bari Road well ahead of the programme.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who will attend as the chief guest and inaugurator, will formally flag off the procession, signalling the beginning of the immersion ceremony. The event is expected to showcase the artistic excellence of various Durga Puja committees while providing residents an opportunity to witness the grandeur of the concluding phase of the festival.
Several senior members of the state cabinet are scheduled to be present on the occasion, including Santana Chakma, Sushanta Chowdhury, Tinku Roy, Bikash Debbarma, Sudhangshu Das, Shukla Charan Noatia and Kishore Barman.
The programme will also witness the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, MLA and BJP State President Abhishek Debroy, and West Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Bishwajit Shil as special guests.
Among the specially invited dignitaries expected to attend are Chief Secretary J K Sinha, Director General of Police G S Rao, and ICA Secretary Kiran Gitte.
With a large turnout of spectators anticipated, the administration has made extensive arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the carnival. The annual ‘Mayer Gomon’ programme has, over the years, evolved into one of the most awaited features of Durga Puja celebrations in the capital, symbolising a ceremonial farewell to the Goddess while showcasing the state's rich cultural vibrancy, communal harmony and festive spirit.
