MONROVIA, October 20, 2026 – Two months after Liberia received its first group of third-country deportees under a controversial arrangement, questions remain over the expected arrival of additional migrants and the government’s plans for their accommodation.
The first group arrived on August 20, 2026, under an arrangement reportedly involving the possible transfer of up to 1,200 people to Liberia.
However, no further arrivals have been confirmed in the information available to this newspaper, raising questions about the status of the agreement and whether additional transfers are still expected.
The initial group reportedly comprised 20 people, although accounts differ over how many eventually disembarked in Liberia.
Reports indicate that several passengers, including Cuban, Brazilian and Cameroonian nationals, declined to disembark and were subsequently flown to Equatorial Guinea.
Those who remained in Liberia are reportedly being accommodated at a hotel in Marshall, Margibi County, with assistance said to involve the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and local authorities.
The Liberian government has maintained that its decision to receive the deportees was based on humanitarian considerations.
It has also described the arrivals as guests rather than prisoners, indicating that they would be allowed freedom of movement and could seek asylum in Liberia.
However, reports alleging that Liberia agreed to receive US$5 million under the arrangement have raised questions about its financial terms. The reported payment has not been independently verified.
Two months after the initial arrivals, several issues remain unresolved, including whether the government expects additional deportees, how many people are currently being accommodated in Liberia and what arrangements exist for their longer-term stay.
The government has not provided an updated timetable for further transfers in the information available for this report.
With the original arrangement reportedly covering up to 1,200 people, the absence of a publicly confirmed schedule leaves uncertainty over whether the remaining transfers will proceed.
For now, the central question remains: Are more deportees coming to Liberia, or has the arrangement changed?
