By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and with support from the Australian Government, is strengthening tobacco and alcohol prevention efforts across Belize through youth-focused and community-based initiatives.
Last week, the programme reached the Stann Creek and Toledo districts with activities aimed at raising awareness and promoting healthier lifestyles.
In Dangriga, the initiative hosted the Stann Creek Youth Tobacco and Alcohol Forum, bringing together young people and stakeholders to discuss the risks and consequences of tobacco and alcohol use.
The forum encouraged participants to become advocates for healthier choices among their peers. A community sensitization session followed, engaging residents and stakeholders on prevention, awareness and the importance of creating supportive environments that promote healthier living.
In Punta Gorda, the Toledo Youth Tobacco Forum provided young people with an opportunity to share their perspectives, expand their knowledge and discuss practical ways to prevent tobacco and nicotine use among their peers. The activities form part of a broader joint prevention initiative designed to empower young people, strengthen community participation and promote evidence-informed strategies to address tobacco and alcohol use.
The Ministry expressed appreciation to staff of the National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC) and the respective district teams for their work in coordinating and implementing the forums and community activities.
