Lido wants lenders to stop worrying about getting stuck at the exit. Its proposed lending platform, Lido Lend, now includes a feature called Fallback Exits, which would let lenders withdraw liquidity using borrower collateral when markets turn rough.
What Fallback Exits actually do
Lido contributors announced Fallback Exits on October 16, 2026. That came nine days after they first unveiled Lido Lend on October 7, 2026.
The feature targets a specific problem. In a lending market, lenders deposit an asset, and borrowers take it out against collateral. Under normal conditions, a lender who wants out simply withdraws whatever loan asset is sitting idle in the pool. The trouble starts when borrowers have taken nearly all of it.
Fallback Exits offer a second door. When primary loan-asset liquidity is lacking during market stress, lenders can access borrower collateral instead of waiting for the pool to refill.
How Lido Lend is built
Lido Lend is proposed as a decentralized lending market based on a modified fork of Morpho Blue.
The platform is meant to serve two groups. One is long-term passive lenders who want yield without hidden risks. The other is professional borrowers, particularly those running leveraged positions.
Lido Lend would operate through isolated markets. Each market stands on its own, so trouble in one pairing is designed to stay in that pairing instead of spreading across the whole platform.
The markets would center on blue-chip and price-correlated assets. Examples in the proposal include wETH/wstETH, stETH/ETH and USD/Treasury RWAs, meaning tokenized real-world assets tied to US Treasuries.
The proposal also includes deposit screening to filter out tainted funds, aimed at keeping illicit or compromised assets out of the markets in the first place.
Why Lido is leaning so hard on safety
Lido built its reputation in liquid staking. Its stETH product has over $25 billion staked without any significant security breaches, according to the research findings.
DeFi lending has had a rough stretch. The KelpDAO bridge exploit in April 2026 was one of several incidents that raised concerns about liquidity crunches and collateral safety across the sector.
Not a done deal yet
None of this is live. The launch of Lido Lend hinges on approval from the Lido DAO, the governance body that steers the protocol.
Technical specifications and protocol details are expected in the coming weeks. The DAO is set to weigh in on both whether to accept the protocol and what its launch parameters should be, including market settings.
The project’s timeline anticipates a full launch in Q4 2026. That target is contingent on successful governance votes, so the date could move if the DAO pushes back or asks for changes.
What this means for lenders and the DeFi market
A lender using a Fallback Exit would walk away with collateral, not the asset they originally deposited. In a correlated market like wstETH/wETH, that gap may be small, but it is still a different position than the one the lender signed up for.
The emphasis on isolated, blue-chip markets may also appeal to institutional investors, per the research findings. Institutions tend to prefer contained risk and familiar assets, and Treasury-linked RWA markets fit neatly into that preference.
The next checkpoints are clear. Watch for the technical specifications, the DAO votes on acceptance and launch parameters, and whether the Q4 2026 timeline holds once governance has its say.
