Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Mark Carney are set to announce new measures Wednesday to support Canada’s steel and automotive industries.
A source familiar with the plans told QP Briefing that the two leaders will be joined in Ottawa by their respective finance and industry ministers to unveil a support package designed to help businesses and workers navigate ongoing trade disruptions.
The measures are expected to target broader industry challenges, the source said.
The announcement is also expected to include support for Canada’s critical minerals sector.
The Ford government has been seeking federal assistance to advance development of the Ring of Fire, a mineral-rich region in northern Ontario considered strategically important to Canada’s ambitions in electric vehicle manufacturing and critical minerals production.
Specific details of the support package, including its cost and how funding would be distributed, have not yet been disclosed.
