Connor McDavid is off to a nearly unbelievable offensive start in 2026-27, amassing a league-best 23 points in eight games and leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 6-1-1 record.
The Canadian superstar is at the absolute top of his game, but he isn’t as focused on his individual production as he is on the team’s success.
“I care more about how the game looks overall, and how it feels out there,” McDavid told reporters Monday, including NHL.com’s Derek Van Diest. “It’s been good at times, and there’s been times where I feel like I can do more and everyone can do more. That’s more important.”

No. 97 continued: “I think the team’s just playing well. Anytime the team plays well, you’re going to have guys have success, and I think you’re seeing that kind of throughout. It’s not necessarily on the stat sheet for everybody, but everybody is playing really well, doing things detailed, structured, playing hard, a lot of really good things.”
McDavid has benefited from playing on a line with fellow superstar Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin, who is breaking out alongside two of the best players in the league.
Edmonton is undoubtedly top-heavy, but the combination has paid off for new head coach Mike Babcock. Whether it stays together when injured forwards return remains to be seen.
“I think Leo and I, when we did play together it was just a one-off or a situation where we needed to find one and we knew it wasn’t necessarily a long-term thing,” the captain added. “So, to be able to have a stretch of games playing together — who knows what happens moving forward — but playing together has been so much fun, obviously, along with (Podkolzin) and (Mattias Ekholm) and (Evan Bouchard).
“I’ve said all along being out there with those guys, everybody knows where each other is, everybody has been reading off each other, playing fast, and everybody can make a play. It’s a pretty fun group to be out there with.”
After an extended offseason following a first-round playoff exit last spring, McDavid has wasted little time finding his rhythm this year.
His torrid offensive production has helped put Edmonton in a strong early position, even as the captain sees room for improvement.
He’ll look to keep his season-opening point streak alive when Kirill Kaprizov and the Minnesota Wild visit Rogers Place on Tuesday night.
