The House of Representatives has called for an independent investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Etimbuk Sunday, at the orientation camp in Enugu State.
The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to strengthen medical services and emergency response systems across the country to prevent avoidable deaths.
The resolutions followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Akwa Ibom lawmaker, Unyime Idem, who raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s death on October 11, 2026, after a reported medical emergency.
The House noted that Sunday, a former president of the Students’ Union Government at Akwa Ibom State University, had visited the camp clinic on October 7 with symptoms reportedly consistent with malaria or typhoid.

Concerns were raised over the treatment he received, an alleged delay in referring him to a hospital and reports that his body was handed over to his family without clothing and with visible bruises.
The lawmakers’ call for an independent investigation is aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the corps member’s death and determining whether there were lapses in the medical care and emergency response provided at the camp.
The House also stressed the need to strengthen healthcare facilities and emergency response procedures at NYSC orientation camps and other public institutions nationwide.
