It’s an almost reverent ritual that’s received generational acclaim, between storied Mayfair establishments and Regency-inspired confections, offering a delicious reason to savour the afternoon.
Indulging in afternoon tea is an iconic London experience, somewhere between a leisurely stroll through Hyde Park and an afternoon spent browsing the boutiques of Mayfair. For decades, the British and those choosing to be inspired by their tradition have carved a special spot between lunch and dinner that’s dedicated to savoury snacks and sweet treats.
In any classic afternoon tea experience, the first pleasure starts with the ambience. Often presented in a beautiful room, with a tiered stand laden with dainty sandwiches, warm scones, little pots of jam and clotted cream, the traditions endure for a reason. Then there’s the tea: take your pick from a robust Earl Grey, a delicate Darjeeling or even a more unusual blend chosen with a tea sommelier. And, for those who like their afternoons with a little sparkle, champagne is a merry part of the picture.
A cosy interlude
As with all things popular, the tradition has a few stories clamouring to be the origin. The beginning is often traced to Anna Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the 1840s. With dinner in fashionable society increasingly served later in the evening, the long gap between lunch and supper left plenty of room for a little something to eat. The Duchess is said to have requested tea, bread and butter, and cake in the late afternoon, a simple indulgence that gradually developed into a social occasion. Friends were invited to join her, and before long, the practice had caught the aristocracy’s fancy.
As the custom gathered popularity during the Victorian era, it became an opportunity to entertain, exchange gossip and enjoy a leisurely interlude away from the day's obligations. The menu evolved, too. What began as a modest accompaniment to tea grew into the familiar spread of dainty sandwiches, scones with cream and preserves, and an assortment of cakes and pastries. London's grand hotels helped turn the ritual into an art form, with elegant dining rooms, fine china, tiered cake stands and attentive service becoming as much a part of the experience as the food itself.
What makes London especially compelling is the sheer variety of experiences it offers. At some addresses, the pleasure lies in preserving a tradition that has been perfected over generations; at others, it is in discovering inventive flavour combinations, seasonal creations and menus inspired by everything from French patisseries to popular period dramas.
A small note on the distinction between afternoon tea and high tea: the former is traditionally a lighter meal served in the late afternoon, while high tea historically refers to a more substantial evening supper.
Ahead, a curated edit of afternoon tea spots, perfect to visit whether it’s your first time or a return to familiar streets:
Claridge's
Best for: A classic afternoon tea in Mayfair
There is something reassuring about an institution that understands the value of getting the details right, consistently. At Claridge's, afternoon tea is a celebrated Mayfair ritual, served in both The Foyer and the Reading Room, where the atmosphere is elegant without feeling stiff, focused on the pleasures of an afternoon spent by simply sitting back and enjoying oneself.
The room, the service and the steady arrival of well-prepared treats all contribute to an unforgettable experience. A pianist plays tunes from a bygone era, and the hotel’s interiors echo a sense of old-world glamour.
The menu stays close to the pleasures that make afternoon tea so enduring. Expect delicate finger sandwiches, including favourites such as cucumber and watercress, followed by warm scones accompanied by Cornish clotted cream and Claridge's own jam. The pastries change with the seasons, bringing fresh flavours and colour to the plate. Tea deserves its own moment here, with options ranging from a rich oolong to the hotel's signature blend.
The Ritz London
Best for: Old-school glamour
Afternoon tea at The Ritz is ceremonial, and served in the hotel's opulent Palm Court. Tying the experience together is a celebration of grand interiors, polished service and the pleasure of doing things properly. A live musical ensemble and the beautifully appointed surroundings give you a reason to dress for the afternoon, take your time and appreciate the ritual.
The menu follows the familiar sequence, beginning with finely cut sandwiches before moving on to freshly baked scones served with Cornish clotted cream and strawberry preserve. Then comes the hotel's signature flourish: a selection of seasonal cakes and pastries presented from a tableside trolley. Chocolate creations, fruit-forward patisserie and traditional English cakes give the final course a sense of abundance, with replenishments available throughout the service.
There is also an impressive selection of loose-leaf teas, including the Ritz Royal Blend, created exclusively for the hotel. Those looking to elevate the occasion further can add a glass of Champagne.
The Lanesborough
Best for: A Regency-inspired afternoon
If your idea of afternoon tea involves a little romance, elaborate confections, and the possibility of a scandalous drawing-room conversation, The Lanesborough's Bridgerton-inspired experience makes for a charming stop. Drawing on the Regency era and the world of the much-loved series, the limited-edition tea brings the drama of grand balls, courtship and intricate social manoeuvres to the table.
Served in the elegant surroundings of The Lanesborough Grill, the experience combines the hotel's exemplary hospitality with a menu designed to be admired as much as it is enjoyed.
The savoury course features finger sandwiches with fillings such as Westcombe cheddar and spring onion. Freshly baked scones follow, ready to be broken open and generously dressed with clotted cream and jam. The real decadence lies in the sweet course, where head pastry chef Jolan Thiery creates confections inspired by the series and its characters. Benedict's Masquerade, for instance, combines chocolate and tonka mousse with hazelnut praline, finished with a chocolate mask. Other creations draw on the mystery of the masked woman at the heart of the story and the beauty of an English garden. Guests can pair the experience with a choice of tea or infusions, Laurent-Perrier Champagne, or a bespoke cocktail. With live piano accompanying afternoon tea on selected days, it is a particularly appealing choice for travellers who enjoy a little storytelling with their pastry.
Kettner's, Soho
Best for: French-inspired savouries and a spirited Soho afternoon
Kettner's brings a different sort of energy to the afternoon tea scene, combining the character of its historic Soho address with a distinctly French approach to the menu. Its first-ever afternoon tea, created by UK Group Executive Chef Nathanial Tofan, looks beyond the expected and introduces savoury creations that feel just as worthy of attention as the patisserie. For instance, Brie de Meaux croffles promise the rich, creamy flavour of cheese wrapped in crisp pastry.
It is an appealing change of pace for those who enjoy the familiar structure of afternoon tea but appreciate a few unexpected additions along the way. The sweet selection is equally inviting. Vanilla madeleines are baked to order, offering the pleasure of a delicate, freshly made French classic, while miniature apple tarte tatin combines caramelised fruit with buttery pastry.
Guests can settle into the restaurant or the Champagne Bar, with tea, champagne and bespoke cocktails available to accompany the spread. The setting lends itself to a leisurely afternoon that might begin with sandwiches and pastries before continuing into sociable drinks. It’s perfect for those who prefer their traditions with a touch of mischief.
Fortnum & Mason's Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon
Best for: British tea heritage and an extravagant finishing touch
Fortnum & Mason has long been associated with the pleasures of tea, making its Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon a natural stop for anyone keen to experience the tradition in London. Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, the salon brings together the familiar comforts of afternoon tea and the department store's longstanding connection with fine teas and food.
The setting is elegant, the service is attentive, and the experience places as much emphasis on choosing the right brew as it does on the sandwiches, scones and pastries that accompany it. An in-house pianist and guided tea-tasting experiences add to the sense of occasion. The salon also makes room for a more playful interpretation of the ritual. Its Winnie the Pooh-themed afternoon tea celebrates the beloved storybook character with imaginative patisserie inspired by the Hundred Acre Wood. A vanilla and raspberry lolly takes its cue from Piglet, a chocolate and orange striped loaf cake pays tribute to Tigger, and a honey and apricot mousse brings Pooh Bear's favourite ingredient into the spotlight.
Finger sandwiches and Fortnum's signature scones keep the experience rooted in tradition, making the themed offering an appealing option for families travelling together. Adults can also explore a seasonal tea menu with more subtle references to the stories. The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon is also a good choice for travellers who want to bring home a little of London's tea culture, courtesy of the store's extensive selection of teas and gourmet provisions.
Jean-Georges at The Connaught
Best for: Contemporary flavours and a beautiful balance
At Jean-Georges at The Connaught, afternoon tea takes on the sensibility of a contemporary dining experience. The restaurant's floor-to-ceiling windows and artworks by Louise Bourgeois provide an elegant backdrop, whilst the menu brings together familiar British staples and flavour combinations that feel a little more adventurous. The result is an afternoon tea that rewards curiosity, particularly for those who enjoy discovering how a classic ingredient can be transformed through a thoughtful combination of textures and flavours.
The savoury selection includes cucumber with orange-blossom cream cheese, which lends a delicate floral note to a familiar sandwich filling. Freshly baked scones with strawberry jam provide a comforting pause before the cakes arrive. Among the highlights are coconut mousse with pineapple confit and coconut dacquoise, a combination that balances airy textures with tropical brightness, and a citrus tartlet filled with lemon curd and blood orange, where sweetness meets a more pronounced, bittersweet edge.
A seasonal tea blend created especially for the hotel sits alongside a selection of 15 teas, while a glass of Billecart-Salmon Brut Réserve NV Champagne is available for those who wish to add a celebratory note. It’s certainly a fit for travellers with an eye for detail.
Crystal Moon Lounge at Corinthia London
Best for: A spectacular ambience
At Corinthia London, afternoon tea begins with a setting that steals the scene. The Crystal Moon Lounge is crowned by a striking Baccarat-crystal chandelier, its glittering presence lending the room a sense of theatre. A silver trolley laden with sweet and savoury delicacies marks the arrival of afternoon tea.
The menu opens with delicate finger sandwiches before moving on to freshly baked scones, accompanied by cream and preserves. The patisserie selection brings together familiar British flavours and more contemporary creations. Apricot Bakewell tart offers a fruity take on a classic, while elderflower cake brings a fragrant floral note. Kentish raspberry cheesecake adds a pleasing tartness, contrasting with the richer combination of dark chocolate and salted caramel choux. A Highgrove honey puff pastry completes the selection with a delicate sweetness.
Guests can also choose from an extensive tea selection, spanning classic black, green and oolong blends alongside seasonal infusions, or add sparkling wine and Champagne to the occasion.
Savour the slow
The real pleasure of afternoon tea is in this simple fact: no two experiences of the ritual need to feel quite alike. One afternoon might call for institutional traditions, another might for playful confectionery, and yet another for inventive savouries.
One caveat only: whichever address you choose, allow yourself a little time. After all, the best afternoon teas are not experiences to hurriedly squeeze in between appointments and to-do lists, but invitations to sit back and sip slowly.
