Capital Group is once again the largest shareholder in Metaplanet, the Tokyo-listed company that swapped hotels for Bitcoin.
The asset manager now holds 143,301,084 shares, which works out to 11.11% of the company’s voting rights. That position comes after a stretch earlier in 2026 when its stake had dipped below 10%.
What the filing shows
The disclosure was filed with Japan’s Kanto Local Finance Bureau on October 23, 2026. It reflects holdings as of October 16, 2026.
The shares are held through Capital Research and Management Company, part of the broader Capital Group organization.
Before the latest buying, the firm held 125,455,820 shares, or 9.76% of voting rights. Getting back to 143,301,084 shares meant adding approximately 17.8 million shares through market purchases.
That jump matters because of where it lands. Japanese rules treat any holder above the 10% mark as a major shareholder, which brings additional disclosure obligations. Capital Group has crossed that line multiple times over the past year as market conditions shifted.
The filing also detailed share-lending arrangements with JPMorgan and Fidelity.
For context, Capital Group’s ownership stood between 11.39% and 11.45% in September 2025, when it held around 129.9 million shares. Today the firm owns more shares than it did then, yet its percentage is slightly lower. The math points to a growing share count, reflecting minor fluctuations throughout 2026 due to share buybacks and dilution dynamics.
How a hotel company became a Bitcoin vault
Metaplanet did not start life as a crypto play. The company originally ran hotel and entertainment operations before adopting a corporate Bitcoin treasury strategy in 2024 under CEO Simon Gerovich.
As of late September 2026, Metaplanet holds approximately 44,000 BTC, placing it among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders globally.
Companies following this model often issue new equity to fund Bitcoin purchases, which dilutes existing holders unless they keep adding. Metaplanet has also used buybacks during 2026, which pulls the share count in the other direction. For a large holder like Capital Group, that means its percentage can drift even when it sits still.
What this means for Metaplanet and its peers
Capital Group trimmed earlier in 2026, then came back with roughly 17.8 million additional shares.
The share-lending detail deserves attention. Lent shares can end up with traders betting against the stock. Arrangements with JPMorgan and Fidelity show the position is being actively managed.
Capital Group’s back-and-forth around the 10% line shows that even committed institutions adjust exposure as conditions change. Watch the next round of filings with the Kanto Local Finance Bureau. Any further changes to Capital Group’s stake, especially another move across 10%, will offer a fresh signal on how big money views the corporate Bitcoin treasury trade.
