Four goals conceded. Again. Newcastle United fans left Coventry on Monday night with sore feet, sorer heads and one question rattling around: is this already getting out of hand?
You’d think so. Matthias Jaissle apologised to the travelling fans after the 4-1 loss, and the numbers look like a bad dream, because Newcastle had 19 shots, two-thirds of the ball and still walked off beaten.
What went wrong at Coventry?
Defending, mostly. Jack Rudoni’s penalty and Sidiki Cherif’s early second-half strike left a mountain to climb, Sven Botman’s screamer gave brief hope, and Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni finished the job.
That’s 13 goals conceded, joint-worst in the league, and Leeds had already hammered them 4-1 at Elland Road. Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports they were “beaten up” again.
Is there panic at St James’ Park?
Not according to the Daily Mail. Craig Hope reported on 14 October that the mood is calm, with no shows of support for Jaissle and no emergency talks among the top brass. Training is “business as usual” before Aston Villa on Saturday.
Eight points from six games leaves Newcastle 11th. Not a disaster, not a party either. Crystal Palace away and two Everton games in five days follow Villa.
Craig Hope wrote: “The mood inside the club has been one of calm in the wake of the defeat at Coventry, a second 4-1 reverse on the spin away from home. There has not, we understand, been any need for shows of support for Jaissle or conversations among the top brass.”
Can Jaissle fix Newcastle’s leaky defence quickly?

If I’m Jaissle, I start with how we lose the ball, not how we score. Possession of 66.7 per cent tells me the shape in attack works. The damage comes in transition, and the Simms goal, born from a loose pass near our own box, shows the risk in playing out from the back while opponents press. I’d simplify those moments straight away.
Midfield worries me too. Opponents keep running through the middle, and Yoane Wissa struggled as a number 10 at Coventry. I’d move him closer to goal and give Nico González and Lewis Miley a clearer protective job.
Carragher’s physicality point stings, yet I’d answer it with shape and set-piece drills, because Cherif’s goal followed a long throw we couldn’t clear. Hall and Joelinton were caught in possession for Simms’s goal, so I’d tell both to clear their lines when pressed, not dribble out.
Villa at St James’ Park gives me a crowd and a chance to win ugly. A tidy 1-0 beats another open shootout. The board’s calm buys me time, but eight goals in two away games won’t keep buying it.
