The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has congratulated the Christian Association of Nigeria on its 50th anniversary, urging religious leaders to sustain interfaith dialogue and promote peaceful coexistence in the country.
The NSCIA, in a statement signed by its secretary-general, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, on behalf of its president-general, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, described the anniversary as a significant milestone for the Christian community and Nigeria as a whole.
The council said religious leaders and institutions had continued to play important roles in promoting peace, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence despite the challenges confronting the country.
It noted that Muslims and Christians constituted the overwhelming majority of Nigeria’s population and shared the responsibility of promoting peace, justice, security, responsible citizenship and national development.
The statement reads: “The NSCIA recognises the importance of the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria. Our two communities constitute the overwhelming majority of the Nigerian population and share a common responsibility to promote peace, entrench justice, advance security, contribute to responsible citizenship and the development of our dear country.”
The council identified injustice, insecurity, poverty, unemployment, social inequality and poor governance as major challenges requiring collective action by Nigerians.
It stated the need for sustained interfaith dialogue and cooperation, particularly through platforms such as the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, which provides opportunities for religious leaders to discuss issues affecting national peace, unity and development.
The NSCIA said CAN’s golden jubilee should serve as an opportunity for religious leaders to reflect on their responsibilities in strengthening national unity and promoting peaceful coexistence.
