State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku today (13 October) said the government has planned to increase exportable egg production, as the country marked a positive development by successfully exporting hatching eggs to Nigeria for the first time this year.
To this end, the state minister urged all concerned to work together to produce high-quality eggs, reduce production costs in the poultry sector and enhance farmers' capacity.
He came up with the plan at a discussion marking World Egg Day at the conference room of the Cotton Development Board in the capital. This year's theme was "The Protein That Powers and Protects."
Producing quality products would create opportunities to meet domestic demand and export eggs to international markets, the state minister said.
He said keeping poultry feed prices at an affordable level was essential to reducing egg production costs, adding that all concerned must play their roles responsibly.
He urged stakeholders not to use antibiotics in poultry feed under any circumstances.
He stressed the need to develop the habit of including one egg in the daily diet.
Calling on young entrepreneurs to come forward in the poultry sector, he said the emergence of new entrepreneurs would expand economic activities at the grassroots level and further strengthen the rural economy.
The sector's potential could be harnessed through improvements in production and marketing systems, he added.
Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Md Shahjahan Khan chaired the event.
Convener of the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council Mashiur Rahman and Senior Vice-President of the Bangladesh branch of the World's Poultry Science Association Md Sirajul Haque attended the programme as special guests.
Additional Secretary of the Livestock Division of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Syeda Nowara Jahan, Executive Director of the Cotton Development Board Agriculturist Md Rezaul Amin, Director (Administration) of the Department of Livestock Services Md Boyzar Rahman and officials at different levels of the department were present as guests.
Earlier, a rally was held and eggs were distributed free of charge to mark the day.
