Expats · South Africa
South Africa does offer a visa for remote workers, but it is a visitor’s visa with an income floor of R650,796 a year (about US$39,500). It bars work for South African employers, so it suits people paid from abroad, not people who want a local job.
Key Facts
—Who. Americans and other foreigners who work for an employer or clients outside South Africa and want to live there for months at a time.
—What. The remote work visa, a visitor’s visa that lets you live in South Africa while working only for foreign employers.
—Why it matters. The minister put the income floor at R650,796 a year (about US$39,500 at 16.48 rand per US$), well below the R1 million (about US$60,700) first set in the 2024 regulations.
—The catch. You may not take South African employment, and you must register with the tax authority if you stay more than 183 days in a 12-month period.
The Short Answer: Yes, With Limits
South Africa has a remote work visa, created by amendments to the immigration regulations that were gazetted in May 2024. It is a visitor’s visa issued under section 11(1)(b)(iv) of the regulations, not a work permit.
In a reply to a parliamentary question dated 2 April 2026, the Minister of Home Affairs described it as strictly limited to foreign-employed people. Holders may not take up employment in South Africa, and the minister argued they do not compete with local workers because they work remotely for employers abroad.
In plain terms, the visa is for people whose salary or clients are outside South Africa. Everything else on this page follows from that rule, so test your own situation against it before you spend money on documents and flights.
This guide covers the rules that are confirmed. For the wider picture of moving to the country, see our guide to moving to South Africa and the South Africa hub.
Who Qualifies and the Income Test
The central test is money. The minister said applicants need a gross income of at least R650,796 a year, which is about US$39,500 at the EODHD rate of 16.48 rand per US$ on 14 October 2026.
The regulations first set the bar at R1 million a year (about US$60,700). Home Affairs lowered it in October 2024, which makes the visa reachable for mid-career remote workers and not only for high earners.
Applicants must be employed or paid from outside South Africa. Law firms that advise on the visa say officials ask for three months of bank statements to prove the income.
Documents to Prepare
Immigration advisers list a standard pack for the application. Check the current list with the South African mission that handles your file, because requirements can change.
Expect to need a valid passport, a contract or proof of foreign employment, three months of bank statements and proof of where you will live. Advisers also list health insurance, police clearance certificates and a medical report.
Police certificates and medical reports take time to arrange. Request them early.
How Long You Can Stay
Home Affairs provides for remote work stays of more than three months and up to three years. Home Affairs sets the validity for each applicant, so do not assume you will receive the maximum.
Legal advisers say applicants usually have to apply from outside the country and cannot switch from a tourist stay once they have arrived. Plan the application before you book a long flight.
US citizens can visit South Africa without a visa for up to 90 days, so a test trip needs no paperwork. A first visit to a city such as Cape Town, covered in our October events guide, is a sensible way to decide before you apply.
Tax: The 183-Day Rule
The minister told Parliament that holders must register with the South African Revenue Service if they stay in the country for more than 183 days in any 12-month period. Staying less than that does not by itself remove every tax question.
Law firms add that applicants from countries without a tax treaty with South Africa must register whatever the length of stay. Because the rules differ by country, speak to a tax professional before you sign a lease.
Americans have an extra reason to check: the United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live. A tax adviser can explain how South African registration and US filing interact.
What the Income Floor Means Month by Month
Spread over a year, R650,796 comes to about R54,200 a month, or roughly US$3,300 at 16.48 rand per US$. That is gross income, before any tax in your home country.
For a single remote worker that is a modest salary by US standards, but a couple or a family still has to show the income of the main applicant. We could not confirm from an official document how Home Affairs treats spouses and children, so ask the visa centre before you apply.
Remote workers paid by several foreign clients face a harder proof problem than salaried staff. Contracts with several clients and bank statements that show regular payments from abroad will usually make the case clearer than a single lump sum.
What the Visa Does Not Give You
The visa does not allow you to take a South African job, and it is not a route to permanent residence on its own. It is a way to live in the country legally while your employer or clients stay abroad.
What It Means for You
If you earn at least R650,796 a year from a foreign employer, the visa is a lawful way to base yourself in South Africa for longer than a tourist stay. If you earn less, or if you want to take local work, it will not fit and you should look at other visa categories.
The sensible order is to check your income against the threshold, gather the documents, and ask a tax professional about the 183-day rule. Start well before your planned move, since the application goes through the South African mission.
What Is Not Known
The Home Affairs reply to Parliament gave no figures on how many remote work visas have been applied for or approved. We therefore cannot say how long approvals take or how often applications are refused.
Fees, processing times and the exact validity granted in practice also vary by source and by case. We have left out figures that we could not confirm from an official document.
