Travis Kelce ready for emergency role beyond tight end at Kansas City Chiefs

Travis Kelce has another job to prepare for as the Kansas City Chiefs look to protect themselves against a special teams emergency. The veteran tight end already carries a big workload on offense, but special teams coordinator Dave Toub wants him ready to step in at long snapper if the team needs him.The plan comes during a significant stretch of Kelce’s career. The 2026 season could be his last in the NFL, and the Chiefs are off to a 4-0 start. Currently, Kelce remains focused on his usual role. However, an injury to the team’s regular long snapper could put him in an unfamiliar position on game day.

Dave Toub has a backup plan for Travis Kelce at long snapper

Toub recently explained why he wants Kelce ready to handle long-snapping duties if an emergency strikes. Speaking to reporters about the Chiefs’ backup options, the special teams coordinator said, “I definitely thought about it, and I said to myself, ‘We need to get Kelce.’”He added, “Because Kelce’s our guy. You can dial him up in two snaps, and he’s ready to go, but we need to practice it. The other guy that does it now is Gray, Noah Gray. So, two really good athletes that fit the bill.”The comments highlight Kansas City’s plan to prepare more than one player for a position that often goes unnoticed until something goes wrong. Long snappers handle the precise snaps required for punts and field goals.

A poor snap can disrupt the entire play, leaving the holder, kicker and coverage unit scrambling to recover. The Chiefs currently rely on James Winchester as their regular long snapper. He has played every Kansas City game since joining the team in 2015, building a streak of 205 appearances, including playoff games, as of January 2026. The Chiefs re-signed him to a one-year, $1.75 million contract in March 2026.

Chiefs have already faced a long-snapper emergency

Kansas City has a reason to take this backup plan seriously.

During a preseason game against the Detroit Lions in August 2024, Winchester left with a shoulder injury. Noah Gray stepped in to snap for punter Matt Araiza on Harrison Butker’s 56-yard field goal.Gray, a tight end, had never long-snapped in a game at any level. Kelce could not take over because he had already finished his day after the second offensive possession. Toub later praised Kelce’s ability and identified him as another backup option. The Chiefs’ concerns also echo a problem Jacksonville faced on October 12, 2026, against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jaguars long snapper Ross Matiscik injured his shoulder in the first quarter, forcing defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton to take over. A high snap disrupted the timing on a late missed extra point, although Hamilton later snapped for Cam Little’s 57-yard game-winning field goal in Jacksonville’s 19-17 victory.

That sequence showed how quickly a long-snapper injury can affect a game. Toub wants Kansas City’s emergency options to get practice before a similar situation arises.Kelce has already produced 246 receiving yards and two touchdowns through four games in the 2026 season, according to the supplied report. He finished 2025 with 76 catches for 851 yards. As of now, the Chiefs do not need Kelce to replace Winchester. But Toub wants him prepared if the situation changes. If an injury forces the issue, Kansas City hopes its star tight end can handle more than his usual duties without being caught off guard.
