There is a lot on Victor Wembanyama’s shoulders now that the season begins. The San Antonio Spurs lost their season opener to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 116-104. Therefore, the premonition that Wembanyama will come out hot is premature for now.
On Friday, the Spurs took on the Houston Rockets. At the start of the game, Wembanyama scored the first bucket with a putback dunk—a sign he’s a force to be reckoned with this year and beyond.

There is no question that Wembanyama is the face of the Spurs. Last year, Wembanyama won Defensive Player of the Year as San Antonio reached the NBA Finals. However, they lost to the New York Knicks in a memorable series. Altogether, Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 blocks per game.
This year, expectations are that Wembanyama will take his game to another level, including contending for MVP.
Since he entered the league, he has been an anomaly for his height and versatility, redefining the role of the big man. However, like most great players, Wembanyama’s greatness is called into question unless he wins a championship.
Luckily for Wembanyama, he is only 22 years old and has plenty of years ahead of him. Meanwhile, ESPN lists the Spurs as one of the favorites to win the Western Conference again. They are ranked behind the Thunder as the favorites.
As this story is being published, San Antonio trail the Rockets 47-42 as the 2nd quarter wraps up. On Saturday, the Spurs will hit the road to play against the Dallas Mavericks.
