The Ministry of Health (Minsa) has started clean up actions in the cemeteries of Soná Centro and Hicaco, in the province of Veraguas. The earthquake of October 9 caused the collapse of structures and mausoleums, which left human remains exposed and foul odors. This resulted in a situation that can lead to health risks. A specific health commission from Panama City is in both cemeteries to coordinate the recovery, sanitation and rehabilitation efforts. According to Minsa, they have intervened due to the unsanitary conditions detected. The process will require several stages before the cemeteries can be renovated.
The first phase involves recovering the bodies and their proper disposal, with respect and dignity. Once the remains are identified and recovered, the families will be contacted. The remains will be cremated, and placed in a crypt that will be built inside the cemetery, according authorities. After the body recovery, it will be necessary to demolish the structures damaged by the earthquake and remove the debris. Then, sanitization work will be carried out, in addition to refurbishing the cemeteries. The Ministry of Health warned that these actions will not be completed immediately, but will be implemented progressively, as each stage of the intervention advances. While the work is underway, the cemeteries will remain closed to avoid risks to the population.
