Tom Cruise is set to receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award. The American Film Institute will celebrate the global icon during a star-studded gala tribute at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on April 24, 2027.
The official X handle announced it on Thursday with the caption, “AFI is proud to name Tom Cruise as the 52nd recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award.”
The AFI Life Achievement Award, presented annually to a single recipient, recognises individuals whose enduring talent has advanced the cinematic arts and earned widespread acclaim from scholars, critics, peers, and audiences alike.
“Tom Cruise is a global icon. As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together,” chair of the AFI Board of Trustees Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement.
“That passion has made him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world. It is AFI’s honour to present him with the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award,” he added.
With a career spanning more than five decades, the actor, producer, and philanthropist has pulled in nearly USD 13 billion at the global box office, earning three Academy Award nominations along the way.
His iconic filmography features blockbusters and classics like Risky Business, Top Gun, Minority Report, Interview with the Vampire, A Few Good Men, The Firm, and the Mission: Impossible franchise. Cruise currently stars in Digger and, as previously announced, is set to share the screen with Anne Hathaway in the upcoming sequel to Days of Thunder, slated for a 2028 release.
He earned Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for his performances in Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, followed by a Best Supporting Actor nod for Magnolia. Most recently, he added a Best Picture nomination to his resume as a producer of Top Gun: Maverick.
The recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award is chosen by the AFI Board of Trustees, following last year's honoree, Eddie Murphy. Over the past decade, the prestigious honour has been presented to a stellar roster of industry icons, including Francis Ford Coppola, Steve Martin, John Williams, Diane Keaton, George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Julie Andrews, and Nicole Kidman.
