BATU PAHAT: Two 17-year-old students were ordered by the magistrate's court today to perform 60 hours of community service for cyberbullying a schoolmate with a disability on TikTok.
Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno ordered both students to complete the community service within six months.
The court also placed them on a one-year good behaviour bond with a RM1,000 surety, imposed a curfew from 10pm to 6am and ordered them to report to the Welfare Department every two months.
The students were charged under Section 507B of the Penal Code with using insulting words in malicious comments directed at their schoolmate.
The offence was committed at a house in Kampung Parit Lapis Sri Ladang, Rengit, at 8.30pm on July 25.
Section 507B provides for a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shahzleen Ibrahim prosecuted the case. Both students were unrepresented.
The victim came across the offensive comments posted by the two students on a video on her TikTok account.
Investigations found that both students admitted posting the comments to cyberbully and insult the victim, causing her emotional distress.
They targeted her after learning that she had a disability affecting the thumb on her left hand.
Police also found that the online abuse continued a pattern of mocking the victim at school.
