Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday, ending the visitors’ perfect start to the Premier League season.
Nicolas Jackson was the hero for Villa, scoring twice to hand Manchester City their first league defeat of the campaign.
The Senegalese striker opened the scoring in the sixth minute after capitalising on a defensive error by City defender Marc Guehi.
Villa maintained their advantage for the remainder of the first half, while goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made important saves to deny City from finding an equaliser.
Manchester City drew level seven minutes into the second half when Erling Haaland headed home from Iliman Ndiaye’s delivery in the 52nd minute.
However, Villa restored their lead eight minutes later as Jackson completed his brace in the 60th minute, finishing from close range after Ibrahim Mbaye’s cutback.
City pushed for another equaliser but struggled to break through Villa’s defence, with Suzuki making further saves to preserve the hosts’ advantage.
The result ended City’s seven-match winning run in the league and dealt a setback to their early-season title campaign.
For Villa, the victory continued their recent positive run against City and provided a boost to their efforts to climb the Premier League table.
Manchester City remain on 21 points, while Villa moved to sixth place with 11 points, according to the standings following Saturday’s match.
