Nigerian singer Tems has made history, with her song ‘What You Need’ becoming the longest-charting solo song by an African act on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The track has now spent a reported 30 weeks on the chart, overtaking the previous best of 29 weeks, held by Tyla’s ‘Water’ and CKay’s ‘love nwantiti (ah ah ah)’.
While ‘What You Need’ peaked at number 29, the milestone reflects longevity, driven by months of steady radio and streaming support rather than a chart peak.
Tyla’s ‘Water’ still holds the higher peak of number 7, remaining the most commercially successful African solo song in Hot 100 history.
