North Korean trade workers are seeking concrete mixer trucks and pump trucks from China in 2026, broadening demand for heavy construction equipment. Trade workers are staff of state-licensed trading companies who manage North Korea’s cross-border commerce with China.
A source in China familiar with North Korea-China trade told Daily NK on Tuesday that these inquiries have picked up noticeably. Excavators, forklifts and cranes have long enjoyed steady demand in North Korea, where state construction projects continue nationwide.
Some North Koreans who once profited from smuggling are now brokering or renting out equipment after their usual trade routes closed, the source said.
“One trader who has long worked around Uiju in North Pyongan province now brokers heavy equipment purchases with partners in China,” the source said. “There were always requests for excavators and forklifts, but demand for mixer trucks and pump trucks has jumped lately. Construction keeps going inside North Korea, so the range of equipment people need seems to be growing.”
Demand is gradually shifting from general-purpose machines that dig or lift toward equipment built for specific construction tasks. Those tasks include mixing, hauling and pouring concrete at factory and housing sites across the country.
Much of this building stems from Kim Jong Un’s 20×10 regional development policy, which the regime launched in 2024. The policy calls for building modern factories in 20 cities and counties every year for a decade.
United Nations Security Council sanctions adopted in 2017 bar countries from supplying North Korea with industrial machinery and vehicles. As a result, much of this equipment trade moves through unofficial channels rather than regular customs clearance.
Former traders who lost income when informal routes closed are now turning to equipment deals, the source said. Their arrival is adding further momentum to a market that was already growing quickly.
Why North Korean builders value heavy construction equipment
What stands out most is the unusual reason North Korean buyers give for wanting these specialized machines.
A mixer truck keeps large batches of concrete turning so the mix does not harden on the road. A pump truck uses hydraulic pressure to shoot concrete up to high floors or across long distances. In most countries, buyers value these machines because they replace manual labor and speed up construction work.
In North Korea, however, buyers reportedly prize them because materials pass through fewer hands along the way. That reduces shrinkage, a term for building materials that vanish somewhere between the warehouse and the worksite. Workers and site managers often pilfer cement, steel and lumber and resell them on the side.
“The more steps where people handle things directly, the more materials go missing here and there, and using the equipment solves that problem,” the source said. “The first reaction is ‘less material will disappear because it passes through fewer hands,’ and that tells you a lot about North Korea’s reality.”
The comments point to a long-running weakness in North Korea’s construction sector, which relies heavily on mass labor mobilization. That labor-heavy approach has created serious problems with materials management, as supplies leak away at nearly every stage.
“Judging by the recent moves of North Korean trade workers, a trend is emerging toward specialized equipment,” the source said. “Buyers are weighing both construction efficiency and materials management when they decide what to purchase.”
With construction continuing across North Korea under Kim Jong Un’s development drive, demand for mixer trucks and pump trucks may keep rising. How far that demand grows will depend partly on how freely such equipment can cross the China-North Korea border.

Daily NK operates networks of sources inside North Korea who document events in real-time and transmit information through secure channels. Unlike reporting based on state media, satellite imagery, or defector accounts from years past, our journalism comes directly from people currently living under the regime. We verify reports through multiple independent sources and cross-reference details before publication.
Our sources remain anonymous because contact with foreign media is treated as a capital offense in North Korea — discovery means imprisonment or execution. This network-based approach allows Daily NK to report on developments other outlets cannot access: market trends, policy implementation, public sentiment, and daily realities that never appear in official narratives.
Maintaining these secure communication channels and protecting source identities requires specialized protocols and constant vigilance. Daily NK serves as a bridge between North Koreans and the outside world, documenting what’s happening inside one of the world’s most closed societies.
