The Portarlington Greek Festival returns to the Bellarine Peninsula on Sunday 1 November 2026, when more than 100 stalls, Greek food, ouzo and live music will fill W.G. Little Reserve from 10am to 5pm.
Portarlington Greek Festival returns for a second year
The Portarlington Greek Festival is back for its second year, and organisers expect up to 20,000 people at the seaside town. The 2026 event falls on the Sunday of the Melbourne Cup long weekend, so many visitors will have the Monday free as well.
Under the banner “Greece comes to Portarlington”, organisers describe the day as a celebration of both Greek and Australian culture. In addition, the program covers live music, Greek dancing, belly dancers, two markets and a range of family activities, according to the Portarlington Business and District Association listing.
Entry to the Portarlington Greek Festival is by donation. Because there is no ticket to buy, visitors can simply walk in and give what they choose on the day, while the Visit Melbourne listing describes it as free entry.
This year the event spreads across a larger footprint than in 2025. Specifically, it will take in W.G. Little Reserve, the Seniors Community Hall and Parks Hall at 65–87 Newcombe Street, opposite the Portarlington Grand Hotel.
Food, ouzo and more than 100 stalls
Food sits at the centre of the program. More than 30 food trucks will serve Greek dishes, while bars will pour ouzo, wine and beer for adults.
The stalls also offer far more than food. Some stallholders will give their products a Greek theme, and others will sell local goods and services, as well as products and services from local businesses.
Families have been part of the plan from the start. In particular, children can see emergency services education vehicles up close, while parents browse the markets or watch the dancing.
Live entertainment runs through the day. At the same time, Greek dance groups and musicians will keep the reserve busy from the morning opening until the 5pm close.
City of Greater Geelong Mayor Dr Stretch Kontelj and Bellarine MP Alison Marchant will officially open the Portarlington Greek Festival, organisers said. Bellarine Bayside and the City of Greater Geelong support the 2026 event.
From a local idea to a Bellarine fixture
Local market organiser Alexandra Dascarellos came up with the idea for the Portarlington Greek Festival. Because of her own Greek heritage, she wanted to bring a taste of Melbourne’s large Greek festivals to the coast.
The first festival took place on Sunday 2 November 2025 at W.G. Little Reserve and Parks Hall. Following that response, the organisers added a third venue and more stalls for 2026.
The event speaks to a community with deep roots in Victoria. Greek City Times reported in April that first-generation Greek migrants in Australia now number fewer than 90,000, so regional events like this one help carry traditions to younger Greek Australians.
Portarlington itself has become a popular day trip. According to Secret Melbourne, the town was recently named the best small town for tourism in Victoria. It is also known as the mussel capital of Australia, so visitors often pair a day out with a mussel boat tour, the Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway or nearby wineries.
Getting there from Melbourne by car or ferry
Portarlington lies about 90 minutes’ drive from central Melbourne. However, many visitors choose the water route instead of the road.
Port Phillip Ferries runs services between Docklands and Portarlington, and the crossing takes about one hour and 10 minutes. Morning departures and evening returns suit a full day at the Portarlington Greek Festival, and bike racks can be booked on board.
The reserve sits a short walk from the pier, so ferry passengers do not need a car once they arrive. Drivers, by comparison, can head south-west via Geelong and then follow the Bellarine roads east to the coast.
Full details for the Portarlington Greek Festival also appear on the Visit Melbourne event listing. The festival runs from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 1 November 2026 at 65–87 Newcombe Street, Portarlington, and entry is by donation.
