US Vice President JD Vance has attributed the nationwide riots in France to mass immigration and the failure to integrate large sections of the population from the ‘third world’, warning Americans against allowing their country to follow a similar path.
Violent unrest spread across French cities on Saturday, 17 October, as a weeks-long revolt involving multicultural youth converged with far-left activists purportedly protesting the cost of living, Breitbart reports. The resulting chaos included clashes with police, widespread looting and vandalism, and arson attacks on public buildings. In Limoges, France, a fire destroyed the tower of the historic City Hall.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez of France said on Sunday morning that more than 2,000 people had been arrested during the riots, while over 600 police officers, gendarmes, and firefighters were injured in the violence.
‘Outrageous acts were committed by several thousand far-left individuals determined to target our public buildings and confront our law enforcement forces,’ Nuñez has stated.
Commenting on the violence, Vice President Vance wrote in an X post on Sunday, 18 October: ‘Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion. They ignored fundamental questions of assimilation and compatibility. They were told it would lead to this, and they didn’t listen.
I pray that France, a beautiful country of amazing people, will stop this madness before more of its landmarks burn. And I hope Americans are paying attention. This is the future congressional Democrats seek for your country.’

Similar concerns were voiced by figures in France, including Mayor Éric Ciotti of Nice, who said on Saturday: ‘Islamo-leftism threatens the Republic. The massive presence of Palestinian flags and community slogans is a terrible reality in these demonstrations, just like the presence of movements close to the Muslim Brotherhood.’
While the Macron government has emphasized the role of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La France Insoumise (France in Rebellion/LFI) party in fueling the unrest, others have argued that decades of mass immigration policies pursued by France’s establishment parties helped create the conditions for such widespread destruction. These policies have contributed to the emergence of ethnic enclaves in suburban areas such as Saint-Denis, where grievances have grown, including among second- and third-generation migrants.
