Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Mombasa Branch Chairman Alamin Ahmed Abdalla has urged the Ministry of Sports to ensure the construction of Mombasa Stadium is completed by April next year, in line with the government’s promise.
Alamin says the development of football at the Coast will continue to face significant challenges without a modern stadium capable of hosting international matches and Kenya Premier League (KPL) fixtures.
He believes completing the facility would provide a major boost to local football by creating opportunities to host high-profile matches and supporting the growth of the sport in the region.
“As promised by the President, our Mombasa Stadium construction should be completed by April next year, and we want to see that happen. Without infrastructure, it will be difficult for us to nurture talent and host national and big matches,” said Alamin.
“We will push both the County and National Governments to ensure it is done.”
Alamin further revealed that FKF President Hussein Mohammed and FIFA President Gianni Infantino had confirmed plans to construct a 15,000-seater stadium in Mombasa.
“Our FKF President Hussein Mohammed and FIFA President confirmed to us that they will build a 15,000-seater stadium here in Mombasa. It will be a plus for us, and we are looking forward to that,” he added.
Mombasa County currently has two teams competing in the Kenyan Premier League, but the absence of a modern, top-tier stadium remains a major setback for the region’s football ambitions.
The situation has forced teams to rely on Mbaraki Sports Ground for their home matches. Last season, Bandari FC were also forced to play most of their fixtures at Kwale Stadium in neighbouring Kwale County after Mbaraki was closed for renovations.
The relocation deprived Bandari of the advantage of playing in front of their home supporters and presented additional challenges during their league campaign.
President William Ruto announced in February this year that the National Government would take over the construction of Mombasa Stadium from the County Government, directing the county to resolve outstanding issues with the previous contractor before the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) could take over the project.
However, months after the announcement, the handover has yet to take place, with construction work still stalled, raising concerns over whether the April 2027 completion deadline will be met.
Once completed, Mombasa Stadium is expected to serve as the home ground for newly promoted Mombasa United, while also providing a suitable venue for Bandari FC and other local teams to host major competitions.
Meanwhile, Alamin has called on Mombasa United supporters to remain patient and continue backing the club despite its difficult start to life in the top flight.
Mombasa United suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz in their maiden KPL match at Mbaraki Sports Ground, conceding a late goal three minutes from time.
Despite the disappointing result, Alamin remains confident the team will improve as the season progresses.
“It is true Mombasa United did not start well in their KPL debut. They lost in the last minute against Kakamega Homeboyz, but I am sure they will keep up,” he said.
“I urge all their fans to continue supporting them, and soon they will start getting positive results.”
