According to UN-Habitat Myanmar, nine “Fish Condos” have been installed to provide shelter for fish, alongside “Coral Beds” designed to help coral fragments regenerate and grow in the underwater areas of Bird Island and South Island, near Ngwe Saung Beach in Ayeyawady Region.
These operations were carried out by the Myanmar Underwater Organization (MUO), aimed at creating marine habitats for fish and restoring coral reefs.
Because coral reefs serve as habitats for fish and other aquatic life, support the livelihoods of coastal communities, and play a crucial role in preserving the marine ecosystem, conservation efforts—including beach cleanups, coral reef conservation awareness programmes, and underwater monitoring—have been conducted since 2017. UN-Habitat Myanmar noted that fish have already begun sheltering and breeding inside the Fish Condos.

UN-Habitat Myanmar highlighted that long-term monitoring and conservation efforts are essential to fully restore the coral reefs, calling on relevant organizations and the public to collaborate in it.
Currently, the survival of coral reefs faces significant challenges, including damage caused by abandoned fishing nets, fishing operations, and boat anchors, as well as marine pollution and climate change.
