Thirty-two years after research began at the Sacred City of Caral, archaeologist Ruth Shady —the driving force behind the research— called on Peruvians to follow the example of this civilization by respecting nature, developing technology, and applying it to everyday life.
The researcher noted that, given its characteristics, this civilization —which developed between 3000 and 1800 BC— has left Peruvians various messages and lessons.
Shady highlighted the resilience and wisdom shown by Caral's inhabitants in their relationship with nature.
She noted that research has established that cities associated with this civilization were never built near rivers, but rather on higher ground, thus avoiding the risk of river overflows and flooding.
Caral's inhabitants built their monuments and residences using techniques that have enabled these structures to withstand seismic activity.
In this regard, Shady noted that Japanese scientists were impressed by this technology, applied through the use of shicras —plant-fiber bags filled with stones and used as building materials for walls.
A valuable legacy
Such aspects should prompt Peruvians to recognize their ancestors' legacy and appreciate how advanced their civilization was, the archaeologist indicated.
Shady mentioned that this contradicts versions that portray ancient civilizations in this part of the world as inferior in development to other contemporary civilizations established in Asia and Europe.
"They made us think we were like children," Shady said.
The expert noted that research conducted in Caral since 1996 has been revealing that it was a society that sought to benefit its population while respecting nature.
Likewise, she said, its inhabitants fostered integration with other areas of what is now Peruvian territory, as shown by various objects found in the Sacred City and in settlements linked to it, originating from Andean and Amazonian areas.
The influence of the Caral civilization is also evident in the 12 archaeological settlements that the Ministry of Culture is currently investigating in northern Lima.
An invitation to celebrate
Meanwhile, Culture Minister Alberto Beingolea welcomed the anniversary of the start of research in Caral.
Furthermore, the Cabinet member highlighted this civilization's similarities to societies that flourished in Egypt and Mesopotamia during the same period.
The Executive Branch representative also noted that conservation work is underway to protect Caral's structures from the effects of El Niño phenomenon.
Event
Ruth Shady and Caral Chief Archaeologist Aldemar Crispin invited the public to take part in Caral Raymi, scheduled for October 23 and 24 at the Sacred City.
On the first day, a ceremony honoring Pachamama will be held, and the site's architectural structures will be illuminated at night.
The following day, a cultural festival and a tour of the Sacred City are scheduled, along with a demonstration featuring Peruvian Paso horses and scissors dancers, led by renowned dancer Qori Sisicha.
Caral is located four hours north of Lima, at kilometer 184 of the North Pan-American Highway, in Supe district, Lima region.
