South Africans have a gift for finding humour in even the most outlandish scenarios, and a new AI-generated video making the rounds on Instagram is proving just that. Posted on 19 October 2026 by Instagram user @just.fomzy, the clip imagines what it would look like if Elon Musk's futuristic flying Tesla vehicles were suddenly unleashed onto South African roads. The result is pure, chaotic brilliance.
Minibus taxis and backyard braais go airborne
Rather than the sleek, seamless future one might picture, the parody drops flying sports cars and airborne minibus taxis straight into the heart of everyday Mzansi life. Taxi drivers shout at one another mid-flight, vehicles soar low over airport runways, and jet exhaust drifts across someone's backyard braai. It is, by all accounts, deeply and specifically South African.
The video's rapid spread speaks to something @just.fomzy clearly understands well: local comedy, rooted in genuine everyday experience, consistently lands harder than anything imported. Following Tesla's recent unveiling of its thruster-powered Roadster prototype that briefly lifts off and jumps over cars, the concept of airborne electric vehicles quickly went viral worldwide. But while Elon Musk's high-tech demonstration belongs to Texas test tracks, in Mzansi, the skies apparently belong to the taxis first.
