The Members of European Parliament strongly supported Pakistan’s position regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, and urged the international community to play its role in ensuring the implementation and strict adherence to the Treaty.
BRUSSELS, Oct 15 (APP): Ambassador of Pakistan to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg Rahim Hayat Qureshi on Thursday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism with the United Nations at its center, while drawing the international community’s attention to India’s violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and the unresolved Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
The ambassador, addressing an event on “The Future of Global Governance” organised by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Ondřej Dostál and Michael von der Schulenburg at the European Parliament, highlighted key aspects of Pakistan’s stance on global order and international law.
He emphasised that Pakistan firmly believed in the pivotal role of the UN and a multilateral system for global peace and stability, underscoring the critical need for stronger global cooperation to foster respect for treaties and international agreements, describing it as the bedrock of the rules-based international order and essential for the survival of international law.
Advocating against the selective application of international laws, the envoy noted that double standards weakened the credibility of global law and undermined cooperation between states, stressing that relations among nations must be grounded in the principle of equal rights.
Rahim Hayat Qureshi called for inclusivity and justice in reforming the global governance system and said that in matters of global interest, the voice of every affected stakeholder must be heard and valued.
The ambassador also urged enhanced international collaboration toward an inclusive international financial system, climate change action, and emerging technologies.
During the session, Ambassador Qureshi drew the international community’s attention toward the Kashmir issue, stressing the importance of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, besides highlighting the violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and Indian unilateral action to hold the Treaty in abeyance.
Endorsing Pakistan’s stand, Czech MEP Ondřej Dostál strongly supported Pakistan’s position regarding the Indus Waters Treaty.
Further carrying Pakistan’s stance forward, German MEP Michael von der Schulenburg urged the international community to play its role in ensuring the implementation and strict adherence to the Indus Waters Treaty.
