The man, who is of Chinese heritage and was born in India before his family eventually settled in Toronto, Canada, travelled to Kenya with genuine hopes of building a profitable business.
How Kisii Investment Unravelled
A Kenyan contact persuaded him that investing in trees was a sound venture, and trusting that assurance, he transferred money for the purchase of seedlings and their planting on land in Kisii County.
The seedlings were planted as agreed, but the arrangement soon took a damaging turn when the Kenyan partner subsequently used the same land as collateral to secure a bank loan.
When the loan was not repaid, the bank moved to recover its money by selling the land outright, leaving the Canadian investor with nothing to show for his contribution.
He says he spent the past two years living in Busia while attempting to salvage the situation, exhausting whatever savings remained in the process.
Canadian Man Pleads for Help to Get Home
With no funds left to purchase a return ticket to Canada, the man is now appealing to Kenyans and well-wishers to assist him in getting back home.
He has spent close to two years in the country and is seeking any form of assistance, financial or otherwise, that could help him make the journey back to Toronto.
Adding a layer of complexity to his circumstances, the man was born in India to Chinese parents who later emigrated to Canada, giving him ties to multiple countries, yet he currently finds himself without the resources to reach any of them.
