Remarkably, the mark also tied Eliud Kipchoge's personal best, placing Kipruto joint-fifth among the fastest marathon runners of all time.
His total earnings could climb even higher through appearance fees and performance-based bonuses from corporate footwear and apparel sponsors, though those figures remain undisclosed. He will, however, not pocket an additional $50,000 (approximately KSh 6.45 million) world record bonus, having fallen short of the world record.
Cool, sunny conditions set the stage for a tactical and ultimately dominant display. Kipruto and defending champion Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda were running shoulder to shoulder at the 30-kilometre mark, leading the rest of the field by 16 seconds.
From there, Kipruto shifted gears, dropping Kiplimo before pulling clear to win by nearly two minutes.
Ethiopia's Tadese Bikila came home second in 2:02:56, with compatriot Milkesa Mengesha taking third in 2:03:46. Kipruto, who had been in contention for much of the race, faded to fourth
Speaking after the race, Kipruto made no secret of the pressure he had placed on himself heading into the event.
"It was either win or die for me," he said, adding that the victory was "all about that mindset."
The win ignited celebrations across Kenya, with President William Ruto among those who publicly congratulated the champion on his historic achievement.
