Marvel Studios has unveiled a second trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, putting Thor and Steve Rogers at the centre of the studio's most ambitious crossover yet, and making room for a joke at its own expense.
The trailer which came out on Saturday focuses on the bond between Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Chris Evans's Rogers, the two heroes who have both proved worthy of wielding the enchanted hammer Mjolnir. It builds on July's first full trailer, in which Thor made Rogers lift the hammer to prove who he was.
This time Thor appears to be leading the Avengers. He rallies the heroes against Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom with a warning: "Doom will tear this world apart. Team up and stand together."
Paul Rudd's Ant-Man supplies the comic relief in a scene that shows how many men in the room have carried the Captain America shield. They are Rogers, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson and Wyatt Russell's John Walker, alias USAgent, who chips in: "I was also Cap for a minute."
The trailer follows The Hollywood Reporter's confirmation that Sandra Hüller has joined the cast in a secret cameo. Hüller earned an Oscar nomination for Anatomy of a Fall and also starred in Project Hail Mary. Marvel declined to comment, but rumours suggest she could play Doom's mother or one of the hooded Latverian Witches seen in recent marketing. Meanwhile, David Harbour has insisted that he did not let slip a spoiler in a recent interview.
Anthony and Joe Russo are directing Doomsday, which brings together heroes from three universes, including the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts. It reportedly runs two hours and 45 minutes and will set up Avengers: Secret Wars, due in December 2027.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in cinemas on 18 December.
