Pakistan and the Maldives have agreed to explore direct air links between the two countries to promote tourism and strengthen bilateral ties.
Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu welcomed ongoing discussions on establishing direct flights during his three-day state visit to Pakistan. He said improved air connectivity would create new opportunities for tourism and bring the two countries closer.
Speaking at a joint ceremony with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Muizzu highlighted tourism as a key area for future cooperation. He also pointed to the potential for halal and Muslim-friendly tourism, noting that the two countries share values and experiences that could support joint initiatives.
During the visit, the two countries signed 20 agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering several sectors, including tourism, information technology, health, education, agriculture, fisheries, and defense.
The leaders also agreed to work towards increasing bilateral trade from $13.9 million to $200 million within the next two years.
President Muizzu’s visit also coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the Maldives, established in 1966. It is the first visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years.
