DONGDUCHEON — Dongducheon, a city in Gyeonggi Province, is drawing attention as a leading getaway near Seoul this autumn foliage season. Served by Seoul Subway Line 1 and regional highways, the city is within an hour of Seoul, making it an easy destination for both day trips and overnight stays. The city is courting autumn visitors with fall colors, newly opened tourist facilities and large-scale cultural events.
Mount Soyo, Dongducheon's signature autumn destination, has long been called the "Little Geumgang of Gyeonggi" for its dense forests and dramatic rock formations. In autumn, the path leading to Jajaeam, an ancient temple where the Silla-era monk Wonhyo practiced, becomes a tunnel of red and yellow maples, set against Wonhyo Falls and the sound of clear mountain streams. With everything from easy walking paths to full hiking trails, it is a must-visit autumn spot for families, couples and hikers alike.
New tourist facilities are also making their debut around Mount Soyo this fall. The city will officially open "Soyo Sai," a mixed-use cultural complex created through a full renovation of a former branded-livestock meat market, on the 19th. The two-story facility houses a tourist information center along with a cafe, foot bath area, gift shop and hands-on culture space.
Hikers and day visitors can unwind with a cup of hot tea and a foot soak after a walk, and the city expects the complex to serve as a key hub in transforming Mount Soyo from a mountain people simply climb into a destination where they linger.

Cultural programming is also extensive. On the 31st, the 38th Soyo Autumn Foliage Festival and the 17th Reenactment of Gen. Eo Yu-so's Procession will be held together at the outdoor concert hall on Mount Soyo. The event will recreate the victory report and procession of Gen. Eo Yu-so, who opened up Korea's northern frontier during the Joseon Dynasty, based on detailed historical research.
Dongducheon Mayor Park Hyung-duk will take the role of King Seongjong and personally perform the historic scene of granting royal land to Gen. Eo Yu-so. The festival will also feature performances by local arts groups, a celebratory stage with invited singers and a range of traditional culture booths, offering visitors a chance to experience history and culture amid the autumn foliage.
Facilities for longer stays have also been strengthened for visitors seeking quiet forest bathing and rest. The Dongducheon Forest Recreation Area in Tapdong-dong operates "Forest Houses" and a "Forest Recreation Hall" set among thick woods, and has introduced a contactless smart check-in service that lets guests enter immediately using a code sent to their smartphone.
A public local platform called "SOOP PICK" is also drawing interest. Guests who scan a QR code in their room can order signature dishes and desserts from long-established local restaurants in Dongducheon, as well as handmade souvenirs, without installing an app and without delivery fees or minimum order requirements.
Orders can be picked up at an unmanned pickup station inside the recreation area twice a day. The area's "Forest Spa" offers a hydrotherapy pool and family spa where visitors can enjoy water-pressure massages while looking out over the forest, while the nearby Dongducheon Healing Forest offers forest therapy programs, trail walks and foot baths aimed at boosting physical and mental well-being.

There are also ample hands-on attractions for families with children. "Noljasup," built next to the forest recreation area, is a forest adventure facility spanning indoor and outdoor spaces. Indoors are climbing walls, rope courses, fun climb and slides, while the outdoor area features net adventure courses, an extreme slide and a treehouse, allowing visitors to enjoy activities regardless of the weather.
The Gyeonggi North Children's Museum near Mount Soyo runs hands-on exhibitions themed around forests and ecology, including "Climbing Forest," where children move up and down inside the body of a giant Brachiosaurus, as well as "Dinosaur Forest" and "Nature Forest." Combined with the "Soyo Star & Forest Theme Park," which has outdoor caravans and a lawn, it makes for an overnight getaway offering both lively activities and a quiet night under the stars.
"From taking in the foliage to resting in the forest and unusual activities for children, Dongducheon is the best destination to experience autumn most fully close to the city," a Dongducheon official said. "We will do our utmost in facility management and event preparation so that visitors can enjoy the autumn atmosphere safely and comfortably."
