Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Real Madrid and Liverpool recorded high-scoring victories in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
PSG defeated Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium, Real Madrid came from behind to beat AS Roma 4-3, while Liverpool thrashed LASK Linz 6-3 in Austria.
Defending champions PSG took control against Manchester City with three first-half goals from Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha.
Doue opened the scoring with a curling effort into the far post before Dembele doubled the lead with a header. Vitinha then fired into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area to give the French champions a 3-0 advantage at half-time.
Erling Haaland reduced the deficit with a header, but Gianluigi Donnarumma’s error allowed Maghnes Akliouche’s effort to result in PSG’s fourth goal.
Haaland scored again to complete his brace and take his Champions League tally to 61 goals, but City could not mount a further comeback as PSG secured the victory.
The result extended PSG’s unbeaten run against English clubs to 10 matches and their consecutive unbeaten run in the Champions League to 12 matches.
In Rome, Real Madrid produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat AS Roma 4-3 in Jose Mourinho’s return to the Italian capital.
Marten de Roon put Roma ahead before Kylian Mbappe equalised for Madrid. Donyell Malen then scored twice within six minutes to give the hosts a two-goal cushion with just over 30 minutes remaining.
Madrid, however, struck three times in the final seven minutes through Espi’s rebound finish, Endrick’s header and Antonio Rudiger’s close-range effort, all following corner kicks.
Liverpool also maintained their winning start to the competition with a 6-3 victory over LASK Linz, scoring three goals in each half.
Bradley Barcola scored his first goal for the club and went on to record his first Champions League hat-trick, while Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Frimpong and Lewis Koumas also scored their first goals in a Liverpool shirt.
