The Kansas City Royals finished last in the AL Central at 69-93 in 2026. Cleveland won the division at 85-77, while the Chicago White Sox finished a game behind the Guardians at 84-78. Kansas City needs to close that gap after a difficult season.
Baseball’s labor negotiations could change how every club spends to do it. A lockout could begin on December 2 if the sides do not reach a new agreement. The current collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, 2026.
Major League Baseball outlined an initial proposal in July that would set a $245.3 million hard cap and a $171.2 million payroll floor for 2027. The cap would limit the highest spenders, while the floor would require clubs below it to raise their payrolls.
Using Opening Day 2026 figures, MLB estimated that 12 teams would have needed to add a combined $617 million to reach its proposed floor. Eight others would have needed to cut a combined $578 million to get under the cap.
That sounds like a favorable trade for Kansas City until the AL Central comes into focus. Spotrac’s 2026 payroll tracker lists the Royals at $150.4 million for the completed season, about $20.8 million below the proposed floor.
The same tracker has Cleveland at $74.5 million, the White Sox at $103.3 million and Minnesota at $115.7 million. Compared with $171.2 million, those clubs were roughly $96.7 million, $67.9 million and $55.5 million short, respectively. Detroit’s $202.1 million payroll was already above that mark.
Spotrac’s completed 2026 totals and the accounting rules in any future agreement may differ, and every club’s roster will naturally change before the next season. MLB’s own estimate uses Opening Day payrolls rather than Spotrac’s completed-season totals.
Still, the contrast creates an interesting dilemma for the Royals. A minimum payroll could push Kansas City to spend more, and a cap could narrow its gap with baseball’s biggest spenders like LA and New York. But the three division opponents below Kansas City in 2026 payroll would face much larger increases if a similar floor were adopted.
More money would give those clubs the ability to add players or retain ones they already have. It would not guarantee better teams, but it could make an already difficult division tougher for a Royals club coming off a last-place finish.
Kansas City could also use extensions, including deals that buy out pre-arbitration seasons, to commit more money to players already on its roster. Keeping those players would have long-term value, paying the same group more, however, would not necessarily address the roster improvements needed for 2027. How extensions would count toward a new floor remains unclear.
The MLB Players Association has opposed the proposed cap system, and no cap or floor has been agreed to. With the current deal ending December 1, the Royals cannot yet know whether a new payroll rule would help them more than it helps their division rivals.
