A building under construction fell in Eastleigh on 23 October 2026. This guide sets out what is confirmed and how it fits the city’s collapse record.
The Eastleigh Nairobi construction safety history is back in focus after a building under construction fell on Friday, 23 October 2026. One person was rescued and others were feared trapped, The Star and Eastleigh Voice report.
Eastleigh is a busy commercial area, so the event matters to anyone who trades with or visits Nairobi. The news report on the rescue follows the operation.
What Is Confirmed About the Eastleigh Collapse
The building stood at 1st Avenue and 9th Street, The Star reports. Nairobi City County said the building was still under construction, although its ground floor was already occupied.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that one person was rescued and taken to hospital, The Star says. Eastleigh Voice says the person rescued was a woman.
Governor Johnson Sakaja visited the site with county officials, The Star reports. He said the building did not comply with construction guidelines and that the county would take legal action against the owner.
Sakaja also said some people trapped in the rubble had been communicating with rescuers, The Standard reports. Eastleigh Voice quotes Senator Edwin Sifuna saying the Kenya Red Cross had spoken with workers inside.
Rescuers were using excavators, breakers and sniffer dogs, The Standard says. The county, the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Disaster Operations Centre and the Kenya Red Cross were all involved.
Police fired tear gas to disperse crowds that were blocking access for emergency teams, The Star reports. The county directed residents to the hotlines 1508 and 1199, according to Capital FM.
What the Outlets Disagree On
The height is not settled: The Star gives 18 storeys and The Standard 16, with one Standard page giving 13. Eastleigh Voice says 18, while Capital FM and a Star report on the governor’s visit say 12.
This article therefore gives no storey count. Nairobi County or the National Construction Authority would be the source to settle it.
The approvals are also unclear. The Standard and Eastleigh Voice quote Sakaja saying the building had no occupation certificate, which is needed before anyone uses a building.
Eastleigh Voice adds that Sakaja said the building did have county construction approval. Neither point has been checked against county records for this article.
Eastleigh Nairobi Construction Safety History
Nairobi has a record of fatal collapses, and the three below are the ones confirmed in named reports. They are not a full list.
On Friday, 29 April 2016, a building collapsed in Huruma, Nairobi. The Star reported on 8 May 2016 a toll of 51, with 19 missing and five pulled out alive.
Citizen Digital quoted police chief Joseph Boinnet saying the owner would face charges because the building was “not cleared for occupation”. The Standard reported on 5 April 2026 that a Milimani court sentenced the owner to seven years and acquitted four officials.
The Standard puts the Huruma toll at 52, one more than The Star reported in 2016. The date of the verdict and any appeal were not confirmed from the pages read.
On Friday, 2 January 2026, a building in South C collapsed, Capital FM and AllAfrica reported. The National Construction Authority (NCA) called it “non-compliant at the time of failure”, having registered the project on 8 November 2023.
Nairobi City County said it took enforcement action against the site in May, July and December 2025, without saying why. Capital FM reported that two security guards died, and on 5 June 2026 the Director of Public Prosecutions approved charges.
Citizen Digital says 37 people face abuse-of-office charges, which are allegations, and The Standard counts more than 40 suspects. The Eastleigh case differs in one respect: the county says the ground floor was occupied while the building was still going up.
Why the Rules Fail, in the Governor’s Words
Sakaja told reporters that fines can be as low as KSh5,000 (about US$38), which he called an insufficient deterrent, Capital FM reports. Conversions use the rate of 23 October 2026, US$1 to KSh129.87.
He said notices are not followed up, Eastleigh Voice reports, and some developers remove architects and engineers, The Standard adds. He has written to the Director of Public Prosecutions and wants county prosecution powers restored, Capital FM says.
These are the governor’s statements, not findings. No investigation report on Eastleigh has been published.
Political Reaction So Far
Eastleigh Voice reports that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula called for impartial investigations and stricter enforcement of building standards. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino asked for an independent inquiry into alleged bribery in the approvals, which remains an allegation.
Opposition figure Kalonzo Musyoka asked how a building of that size could stand and fall in a crowded area. Martha Karua, a party leader, called for an audit of Nairobi buildings.
Police commander Issa Mohamud said investigations would decide who is responsible for any criminal negligence, Eastleigh Voice reports. He said the owner and those who authorised the building could face charges once investigations finish.
What It Means for US Readers
The reports describe no effect on markets, trade or aid. A US traveller or business contact in Eastleigh should avoid the area and use county and police guidance.
Check travel.state.gov for the current Kenya advisory, which was not reviewed for this article. More coverage is on the Kenya hub, with background on Kenya’s nuclear plan and cargo controls at the main port.
What Is Not Known
No confirmed death toll, number rescued beyond one, or number of people inside has been published. A worker told The Star that about 70 workers were on site, a figure no official has confirmed.
The owner has not been named in the reports read, and the cause is not established. The same worker, Alexander Mugure, told The Star a corner of the building had cracked, an account not yet tested by investigators.
What Comes Next
Authorities have said they will issue further updates, and police say investigations will follow the rescue. Whether charges are brought depends on those findings.
This does not mean the building’s owner or any official is guilty of anything. The earlier South C case took five months from collapse to the prosecutor’s decision.
