By Zoila Palma: On October 20, 2026, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Belmopan City Council for the adoption of Harriot Topsey Park.
The park is named in honor of Harriot W. Topsey, Belize’s second Belizean Archaeological Commissioner, who passed away in 1995.
He was a valiant and steadfast champion for the protection and preservation of Belize’s archaeological and historical heritage. His dedication and tireless advocacy permanently changed the face of archaeological work in the country, leaving a lasting legacy in the stewardship and preservation of Belize’s cultural heritage.
“The adoption of Harriot Topsey Park reflects NICH’s continued commitment to community development, environmental stewardship, and the creation of greener and more vibrant public spaces,” NICH said.
NICH says that in partnership with the Belmopan City Council, it takes pride in safeguarding this space for the enjoyment of the community today and for future generations.
