By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Visitors heading to Xunantunich will need to cross the Mopan River on foot for now.
The Institute of Archaeology of the National Institute of Culture and History (IA/NICH) says the ferry at the Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve is currently operating for pedestrian crossing only.
In its latest update on Wednesday morning, October 21, the Institute also confirmed that water related tours at the Nohoch Che’en Archaeological Reserve, a popular cave tubing site, remain suspended.
Barton Creek, which had been closed due to high river levels, has reopened. The ATM Archaeological Reserve, which reopened on Monday, remains open, along with all other reserves across the country.
The Institute is urging tour operators and guides to take extra care, particularly during water activities, as river levels continue to settle following last week’s heavy rains.
NICH says it will continue to monitor conditions and share further updates.
