The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has refuted claims by the Russian military command alleging that Russian forces captured over 1,800 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory and 92 settlements since Sept. 1, military spokesperson Major Andrii Kovalov announced on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Speaking in an official dispatch, according to Ukrinform, Kovalov characterized the claims – delivered in a recent briefing by the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov – as deliberate disinformation engineered to project battlefield progress for domestic audiences and Kremlin leadership amid a lack of operational breakthroughs.

“Due to the absence of significant successes on the battlefield, the leadership of the Russian army continues to create an illusion of large-scale victories for its own political leadership and domestic audience,” Kovalov stated.
“The report of the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, is built on outright falsehoods, manipulations, and exaggerations.”
Kovalov asserted that Ukrainian Defense Forces have liberated more total territory through active counter-offensive and stabilization operations since early autumn than Russian forces managed to seize over the same timeframe.
Rebuttal of claims across Donbas and Zaporizhzhia fronts
The General Staff systematically contested Russian assertions regarding specific towns and frontline axes across eastern and southern Ukraine.

Zelensky Calls Trump’s Sanctions Waiver a Mistake
President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Donald Trump’s suspension of Graham Act sanctions is a mistake that only encourages Vladimir Putin.
Addressing claims surrounding Dobropillia in the Donetsk region, Kovalov affirmed that the city remains firmly under Ukrainian control.
The spokesperson compared Gerasimov’s statements to previous unverified claims made by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sept. 1, when the Russian leader announced the capture of Sviatohirsk, a town that has remained under continuous Ukrainian administration.
Kovalov also rejected Russian reports claiming the capture of Kostiantynivka and Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, alongside assertions that Russian forward elements reached the municipal outskirts of Kramatorsk.
As of Saturday morning, Oct. 17, Ukrainian forces maintain established defensive positions inside Kostiantynivka where active fighting continues, while Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka remains uncontested by occupying forces.
In the Sloviansk sector, the General Staff denied reports of Russian advances into municipal suburbs and claims of Russian control over more than 50 percent of Mykolaivka.
Kovalov explained that a small Russian reconnaissance team infiltrated the southern periphery of Mykolaivka, adding that Ukrainian forces are conducting search-and-strike sweeps to neutralize the pocket.
In the southern Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian military authorities dismissed Russian claims alleging active battles inside Orikhiv and the capture of Novopavlivka and Novoandriivka, confirming all three settlements remain under Ukrainian control.
Furthermore, Kovalov refuted statements that Russian forces had advanced to within five kilometers of Zaporizhzhia’s southern perimeter, stating the line of contact has remained stabilized roughly 22 kilometers from the regional center.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, Kovalov rejected recurring Russian reports alleging the seizure of Velykomykhailivka, confirming the settlement remains under Ukrainian administration with the frontline situated eight kilometers to the east.
Sustained combat tempo across Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka sectors
The Ukrainian rebuttal arrives amid persistent high-intensity ground combat along the eastern theater.
Earlier in the week on Oct. 14, the General Staff logged 222 combat engagements across the frontline within a 24-hour cycle, identifying the Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka axes as the focal points of Russian offensive operations.
During that daily window, Russian forces launched 29 assaults on the Pokrovsk axis, attempting to advance near Bilytske, Novyi Donbas, Chernihivka, Svitle, Dobropillia, and Novopavlivka, alongside 19 assaults repelled around Kostiantynivka.
Ukrainian defense analysts have observed that Russian informational messaging often anticipates tactical objectives rather than reflecting actual operational control, utilizing premature announcements of territorial captures to influence Western political debates and mask high attrition rates ahead of the winter season.
