Jio Expands Research Across 5G, 6G and AI
The company’s patent portfolio covers 5G networks, early-stage 6G research, satellite communications and AI-native network technology. These areas are central to its efforts to develop telecom infrastructure and digital services.
Managing Director Akash Ambani said at the India Mobile Congress in October 2026 that Jio had started filing patents in the pre-6G space. He also highlighted the company’s work on a proprietary satellite communications stack.
At a Jio press conference in Mumbai, Ambani said a team of 12,000 engineers had developed the company’s end-to-end technology stack. He linked these capabilities to Jio’s network expansion, noting that its 5G rollout was completed in 19 months.
AI Services and IPO Put Technology in Focus
Jio is also expanding its artificial intelligence offerings. Ambani highlighted the company’s partnership with Google’s Gemini, which he said had added 30 million subscribers to its flagship AI product. The company plans to introduce a voice AI service offering transcription and summarisation in 12 Indian languages at no additional cost to users.
These developments come as Jio Platforms moves towards its planned IPO. Ambani described the public issue as ‘a great responsibility ', noting that it would be Reliance’s first public offering in 30 years.
The company’s patent portfolio will be an important measure of its technology ambitions. Investors will assess how effectively these innovations translate into commercial services, wider adoption and long-term business value.
